When this happens, you can always mute a chat without leaving it. This way, you can check it on your own terms instead of getting a ping for every new message. To mute a chat in Telegram, head over to the chat in question. Next, tap the name at the top and then hit the mute button. Everyone (default one: Allow everyone to view your profile.
