C5+O.N.E. Cohort Four Launches in Uzbekistan with Focus on English for Economic Development

On May 26, 2025, the C5+O.N.E. (Opening Networks through English) Program launched the Cohort Four focusing on “English for the Economic Development” in Uzbekistan. The C5+O.N.E. Program is funded by the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and administered by the American Councils for International Education.

The Cohort Four launched in Tashkent, Nukus, Fergana, and Urgench, for over 170 participants primarily representing government/state-owned organizations and companies (63%), non-governmental organizations (26%), and private companies (11%). Participants will take part in both curricular and extracurricular activities, including a national networking event, a national workshop (graduation ceremony), and a regional conference. These activities aimed to strengthen participants’ English proficiency and support regional cooperation to enable Central Asian professionals to engage more effectively with U.S. counterparts.

Cohort Four marks an important step in advancing economic development and professional connectivity across the region and with the United States professional community through English language learning and networking.

📍 On May 23, American Councils held the Host Company Orientation session for the Young Professional Internships Program (YPIP) and for the representatives from 38 national and international host companies.

🤝 The event provided an opportunity to discuss expectations and responsibilities of host companies participating in the program. American Councils was especially pleased to welcome several American companies and introduce all participants to the U.S.-style internship model, which emphasizes mentorship, hands-on experience, and professional growth.

🔗 The session concluded with a networking segment, allowing attendees to connect, share insights, and explore future collaborations.

On May 29, the C5+O.N.E. (Opening Networks through English) Program held the virtual kick-off event that brought together over 200 economic development professionals from Central Asia, including representatives of the government, NGOs, media, and private sector, and was attended by the U.S. Ambassadors to the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, along with the representatives of the Department of State. The C5+O.N.E. Program is funded by the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and administered by the American Councils for International Education.

The Cohort Four focuses on “English for the Economic Development”, and over 700 professionals from across Central Asia joined this journey to strengthen their English skills, build new networks and stronger connections across the region and with the U.S.

This program is not just about language — it’s about opportunities. Participants will take part in curricular and extracurricular activities, events, workshops, and conferences designed to create new lasting partnerships.

During the launch on May 29, U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic, H.E. Lesslie Viguerie, noted: “Gathered with us are the foremost economic experts from throughout Central Asia, working in sectors that range from agriculture to banking and finance, to IT start-ups and beyond.”

With the support of the U.S. government, the C5+O.N.E. remains committed to fostering regional collaboration and opening new pathways for economic growth in Central Asia.

🌟 #RARinAction in Khorezm!

On June 4, the Regional Alumni Representative for the Khorezm region, Feruza Masharipova, in collaboration with Urgench State University, hosted a hands-on training in Khiva for over 45 English language instructors from across the Khorezm region. The workshop, titled ”Engage, Explore, Inspire: Professional Development for 21st Century English Teachers”, focused on practical strategies for student-centered teaching to boost classroom engagement and collaboration.

Participants explored hands-on strategies for shifting from traditional, teacher-centered methods to dynamic, student-focused instruction. They also engaged in lively and practical activities such as “Four Corners,” “Jigsaw Reading,” and “1, 2, 3, Uzbekistan,” gaining fresh ideas to make learning more engaging, collaborative, and impactful.

The training was led by Feruza Masharipova and Associate Professor Rohatoy Abidova, with support from Fulbright and TEA alumni Wiley Roberts, Nargiza Hamraeva, and Dilfuza Kuchkarova.
