🌍 Pre-Departure Orientation for Open World Program Delegates

On October 4, American Councils held a Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) for the upcoming Open World Program delegates from Uzbekistan. The session featured opening remarks, an overview of the program, travel guidance, and a discussion of activities in the United States, followed by a Q&A session.

In October, delegates from Uzbekistan are traveling to the United States to participate in professional exchange programs. On October 7, four Members of Parliament began their visit in Washington, D.C., where they met with representatives of the U.S. Congress and the Embassy of Uzbekistan before continuing to Lincoln, Nebraska, to exchange insights on legislative processes and governance at the state level. Later in mid-October, one delegate will travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and another to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to engage with U.S. counterparts in local governance and regional cooperation as part of a broader Central Asian initiative.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Ώ We wish all our delegates a rewarding journey and a meaningful exchange experience as they connect with U.S. partners and continue building bridges of cooperation and understanding.

🌍 Strengthening U.S.–Uzbekistan Cooperation through the Open World Program

From October 7–18, an Open World delegation of Members of Parliament from Uzbekistan visited the United States to exchange ideas on governance, policymaking, and civic engagement.

Their program began in Washington, D.C., where delegates met with Senator Steve Daines, Congressman Bill Huizenga, and Congressman Don Bacon, as well as experts at the Atlantic Council and the Caspian Policy Center. Discussions focused on expanding U.S.–Uzbekistan cooperation, fostering economic growth, and supporting regional stability.

The delegation then traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, where they explored how state and local governments collaborate with the private sector and civil society to drive innovation and community well-being. Visits to Black Hills Energy, Lincoln Electric System, and the Mayor’s Office provided valuable insights into renewable energy, sustainability, and public-private partnerships. Delegates also learned about civil society engagement at Nebraska Appleseed and bipartisan governance through meetings with Nebraska State Senators.

Among key takeaways, Ms. Sapargul Utemuratova noted the strong emphasis on employee well-being and environmental sustainability, and plans to adapt similar practices in Uzbekistan. Mr. Bobur Bekmuradov proposed exploring a sister-city partnership between Kokand and Lincoln, promoting continued cultural and municipal exchange.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Ώ These experiences underscore the shared commitment to advancing transparent governance, sustainable development, and people-to-people diplomacy between the United States and Uzbekistan.

The Open World Program is funded by the U.S. Congress and administered by the Open World Leadership Center in cooperation with American Councils for International Education.

🌍 Through the Faculty Enrichment Program (FEP) three university instructors from Uzbekistan β€” Maksudjon Usmonov, Sardorbek Murodov, and Abdushukur Uriboev β€” have spent the past two months at Arizona State University (ASU), expanding their professional expertise and building new academic connections.

Together with their faculty mentors, they have observed selected classes, participated in hands-on lab sessions, met with the researchers at the Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian & East European Studies, and launched embedded systems research projects.

Beyond academics, the fellows also explored Arizona’s rich culture β€” from an open-mic night at the Tempe Art Center to an Uzbek cultural event on campus and a scenic trip to Sedona organized by the Melikian Center.

These experiences highlight the power of U.S.–Uzbekistan educational exchange in advancing innovation, mutual understanding, and lasting academic partnerships.

The Faculty Enrichment Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and supports the professional growth of higher education faculty by fostering international academic exchange and collaboration.

Stay tuned β€” we’ll be sharing more stories from other Uzbek FEP fellows and their experiences at U.S. universities in our upcoming posts! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Ώ
