"When I visit the past now, it is for wisdom and experience, not for regret or shame. I don't attempt to erase it, only to accept it. Whatever my physical circumstances are today, I will deal with them and remain present. If I fall, I will rise up. As for the future, I haven't been there yet. I only know that I have one. Until I don't. The last thing we run out of is future."
— Michael J. Fox, No Time Like the Future

Anxiety, worry, doubt, imposter syndrome? These things are no good to you. You must push them aside. You must put these impressions up to the test, master them so they don’t master you…so you can do what you need to do.

Prepare

What looks like skill is often just a lot of work that no one sees. Long nights, early mornings, sweat, tears.

If you want remarkable results, you need to work remarkably hard. Professionals go all in. They don’t leave at five every day because that’s 8 hours from when they show up; they grind for small insights. Knowledge accumulates in drips and gets leveraged in buckets.

Big ambitions, low expectations, and high standards are a powerful combination for living your best life.

Ambitions pull you forward when it’s hard. They connect you to something larger. One of my most important ambitions is to be a great father and friend. Another is to leave the world a better place than I found it. You can’t have a meaningful life without a connection to something larger than yourself.

Reality minus expectations = happiness. You will never be happy unless your expectations are exceeded. If you think the world owes you something, you’re going to end up disappointed. The world doesn’t owe you anything. You can’t sit around waiting for the world to come and hand you what you think you deserve. If you want something to happen, you have to take action. Go positive and go first.

High standards – When it gets hard, do not lower your standards. I am not always at my best, but I always give my best. I hold myself to a high bar. I don’t always meet it, but I won’t lower the bar to feel better about myself.

which is the song of the year for you?
Every Day Is All There Is

The great writer Joan Didion said she never felt confident when she sat down to write. Instead of confidence, Didion said, she had “blind faith that if you go in and work every day it will get better.

Three days will go by and you will be in that office and you will think every day is terrible. But on the fourth day, if you do go in, if you don't go into town or out in the garden, something usually will break through.”

When the interviewer asked how she felt when she woke up and in the hours before heading to her office, Didion replied, “Oh, I don't want to go in there at all,” Didion said. “It's low dread, every morning. That dread goes away after you've been in there an hour. I keep saying ‘in there’ as if it's some kind of chamber, a different atmosphere. It is, in a way. There's almost a psychic wall. The air changes. I mean you don't want to go through that door. But once you're in there, you're there, and it's hard to go out.”

As Didion talked about her commitment to writing every day, whether or not she was in the mood, the interviewer recalled hearing Didion once talk about using her good silver at the table every day. “Well,” Didion replied, “every day is all there is.”

“A day is a day. It's just a measurement of time. Whether it's a good day or a bad day is up to you. It's all a matter of perception.”

There are two types of friends:

- Summer Friends are the ones who are there for you when it's warm and sunny, but disappear when the weather starts to turn. They are the seasonal tourists, not the locals.

- Winter Friends are the ones who are there for you when it's cold and dark. They are the locals, who have the wisdom to know that the seasons come and go.
Most people in your life are Summer Friends, and when winter inevitably comes, they are gone.

The Winter Friends are the relationships that you really need to cultivate. Those are the people who will be there for you throughout the different seasons of your life.

You may love having both types of friends in your life, but never make the mistake of thinking your Summer Friends will be there when the seasons change.

Who are your Winter Friends?

Who are the locals that have been there for you when the weather turns?

Cherish them. Be one to someone else.

The best response is often, “You might be right.”

The next time someone disagrees with you or criticizes you, just shrug your shoulders and say, ‘you might be right,’ and watch the energy change.

If you care about the outcome, focus on what’s right, not who is right.

Keep the goal in mind.

Your life is designed to get the results you are getting right now.

For the trajectory to change, the approach must change.
