Scott Bessent is an American hedge fund manager who was sworn in as the 79th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in January 2025. Before joining the Trump administration, Bessent spent decades in finance, notably as a senior partner and Chief Investment Officer for Soros Fund Management and as the founder of his own firm, Key Square Group. He is the first openly gay Treasury Secretary.

Early life and education
Birth and family: Scott Kenneth Homer Bessent was born on August 21, 1962, in Conway, South Carolina. His father was a real estate agent.

Education: He graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School in 1980. In 1984, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Yale University. While there, he was class treasurer and an editor for the Yale Daily News.

Financial career
Soros Fund Management (SFM): Bessent is best known for his two influential stints at George Soros's firm.


From 1991 to 2000, he was a managing partner and ran the firm's London office. He gained significant notoriety for being part of the team that profited approximately $1 billion by betting against the British pound in 1992 (an event known as "Black Wednesday").

He returned to Soros Fund Management in 2011 to serve as the firm's Chief Investment Officer until 2015.

Key Square Group: In 2015, Bessent founded his own macro hedge fund, Key Square Group. The firm focused on global macroeconomic shifts and quickly became a prominent player in the industry.

Working at Brown Brothers Harriman and Kynikos Associates early in his career.

The trend of foreign investors outbidding American buyers is significant in the U.S. housing market, particularly in certain regions. While still a relatively small percentage of total home sales, the resurgence of foreign investment in 2024–2025 comes as high mortgage rates sideline many domestic buyers. Foreign buyers frequently use all-cash offers, making them more competitive against Americans who require financing.

Key trends

Rising foreign investment: After a multi-year decline, foreign purchases of U.S. homes rebounded sharply in the year leading up to March 2025, reaching $56 billion in sales. This was a 33–44% jump over the previous year.

Contrasting domestic market: This influx occurred at a time when U.S. demand was low, with high mortgage rates and home prices pushing many American buyers to the sidelines. Foreign investors are capitalizing on this reduced domestic competition.

Cash offers are common: Foreign buyers frequently pay in cash, with nearly half of their purchases made this way, compared to just over a quarter for all homebuyers. This allows them to bypass high mortgage rates that deter many American families.

More expensive properties: The median purchase price for foreign buyers was significantly higher than the overall U.S. median. This reflects their focus on properties in expensive coastal cities and urban centers.

Targeting of single-family homes: In some areas, foreign investors are increasingly targeting entry-level and single-family homes, putting them in direct competition with local families.
