Hey everyone,
Sorry for going quiet these past few days. If you know me, you know I'm a massive Eminem fan. Ever since his new album dropped, I've been diving deep into every track. It's seriously a masterpiece, so if you haven't checked it out yet, you definitely should!
Anyway, I just finished reading this awesome article and wanted to share it with you all. Take a look and let me know what it reminds you of.

Kat Rosenfield: How Culture Got Stupid

The article I shared is a rather long piece and I wouldn't blame you if you didn't have the patience to read the whole thing.
The language used by the author reminded of typical IELTS passage 3 articles, so I've decided to, with the help of AI, shorten the article to make it read like an IELTS reading passage 3. Enjoy!
The next step is to write the questions. What question types do you think we should work on?

#WordOfTheDAY: Theory
Related idiom: in theory - used to say that a particular statement is supposed to be true, but may in fact be wrong.
Example sentences:
In theory, these machines should last at least 10 years.
That sounds fine in theory, but have you thought it through?
In theory, everyone can get an IELTS 9.0โฆ

WordOfTheDAY: Drowsy
Meaning: Being in a state between sleepy and being awake.
Example: The room is so warm that itโs making me feel drowsy.
I first encountered this word in Eminemโs song โStan.โ Music can be a great way to learn new vocabulary!
Have you ever felt drowsy in a situation where you needed to stay alert? Share your experiences below!

#Speaking
Letโs imagine we are in a Speaking test room, and the conversation goes on like this:
Examiner: What do you like doing in your spare time?
Candidate: I take satisfaction in deciphering books due to the reason that I can attain aberrant intelligence from them.
Examiner: What do you usually read?
Candidate: I derive pleasure from taking entrance into state-of-the-art virtual technology society where human beings can correlate everywhere
(Source: https://ielts.org/news-and-insights/ielts-speaking-tips-common-myths-and-how-to-overcome-them)
While this example may seem a little extreme, some students do actually think an overly-complex answer โfull of academic wordsโ is expected in IELTS Speaking.
In the next post, we are going to look at the top 3 common speaking misconceptions.
Can you guess what they are?

#Misconceptions #Speaking
1. You must use โbig wordsโโ๏ธ
The Truth: Using โbig wordsโ doesnโt guarantee a high band score โ it is using words precisely, flexibly and appropriately that does.
Source: https://ielts.org/news-and-insights/ielts-speaking-tips-common-myths-and-how-to-overcome-them
My personal take: Using 'fancy vocabulary' unnaturally is still a major issue among lower-level candidates in Uzbekistan. What students may not realize is that examiners can easily distinguish between natural and memorized language used solely for the test. On your test day, try to be yourself and aim to communicate your ideas as clearly as possible using words that you are completely confident with.
1. You must use โbig wordsโ
This is perhaps the most common false belief. When my students think about the IELTS Academic test, they automatically assume that they always have to use academic words. They may think the secret is โthe stranger, longer and more complicated the words they use, the higher the band score they getโ.
This canโt be further from the truth. As we can see from the above example, the use of โformalโ words unnaturally forced into responses can lead to complete confusion and unintelligible answers. This is because, despite knowing the meaning of the words, students often are unaware of how they should be used โ things like style or connotations. In fact, speakers are even advised to โmix it upโ โ having a balance between common and less common vocabulary, and to study new words in context.
