#Speaking Let’s imagine we are in a Speaking test room, and the conversation goes on like this: Examiner: What do you like doing in your spare time? Candidate: I take satisfaction in deciphering books due to the reason that I can attain aberrant intelligence…
#Misconceptions #Speaking

1. You must use “big words” ⛔️

This is perhaps the most common false belief. When my students think about the IELTS Academic test, they automatically assume that they always have to use academic words. They may think the secret is “the stranger, longer and more complicated the words they use, the higher the band score they get”.

This can’t be further from the truth. As we can see from the above example, the use of “formal” words unnaturally forced into responses can lead to complete confusion and unintelligible answers. This is because, despite knowing the meaning of the words, students often are unaware of how they should be used – things like style or connotations. In fact, speakers are even advised to “mix it up” – having a balance between common and less common vocabulary, and to study new words in context.

The Truth: Using “big words” doesn’t guarantee a high band score – it is using words precisely, flexibly and appropriately that does.

My personal take: Using 'fancy vocabulary' unnaturally is still a major issue among lower-level candidates in Uzbekistan. What students may not realize is that examiners can easily distinguish between natural and memorized language used solely for the test. On your test day, try to be yourself and aim to communicate your ideas as clearly as possible using words that you are completely confident with.

2. You must have a British or American accent ⛔️

It is so funny how I, as a non-native speaker, used to be fooled by this. When I was a student, I was taught that I had to both pronounce words correctly and sound American or British. Often, teachers use native pronunciation as a benchmark to evaluate students. No wonder why they think they also have to adopt the accent as well.

The fact is, accent is not an evaluation criterion. Although accent is a part of pronunciation, it is not everything. Pronunciation features include other things such as intonation, sentence stress and individual sounds that, if done correctly, can allow students to be clearly understood. And being easy to understand is what the examiner is looking for.

The Truth: Any accent is acceptable as long as test takers are intelligible.

My personal take: I completely agree with the point about having a particular accent. In general, imitating native speakers and adopting a British, American, (or Australian, for that matter) accent is acceptable, but one must have the language skills to back it up. Accent alone is not enough to guarantee a high score. In fact, exaggerating an accent without proper language proficiency might even backfire.

I do not fully agree with this advice and have explained why down below.

3. You must speak the whole truth (misconception)

Some students may panic when they see questions like “Describe an overseas trip that you like” just because they have never been abroad. They end up keeping silent and losing marks for no reason.

IELTS is not a lie detector test. It only evaluates your language proficiency so there is no need to be completely honest. Of course, I would not recommend people to lie all the time, but it is a huge relief to know that you can when faced with difficult questions. Sometimes, a little white lie does no harm, but saves you from unnatural pausing and hesitation.

The Truth: You can make things up in the IELTS speaking test.

My personal take: While it's true that the IELTS speaking test focuses on language skills rather than factual accuracy, I am a strong advocate of honesty, even in the speaking test. When you start making up stories, it can be difficult to keep up with the details, and your language may suffer as you try to maintain the fabrication. Instead, be straightforward with the examiner and talk about real experiences. For instance, if you've never been abroad and the Part 2 card asks about such an experience, lying can make it harder. I strongly recommend being honest and discussing your local travels or a hypothetical situation, such as where you would travel if you had the chance. This approach not only maintains your integrity but also allows you to showcase your grammar skills, for example, by using the second conditional. Honesty helps you stay more relaxed and focused on demonstrating your language proficiency effectively.

Biden’s decision upends the race less than four months before Election Day. Here’s the latest.

President Biden, 81, abandoned his bid for re-election on Sunday as he caved to relentless pressure from his closest allies to drop out of the race amid deep concerns that he was too old and frail to defeat former President Donald J. Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris said she would seek the nomination in his place, and many Democrats quickly lined up behind her after Mr. Biden gave her his endorsement.

“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus entirely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Mr. Biden said in a statement. He called it “the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president.”

Heaven’s Garden Review

Oqtoshsagi Heaven’s Gardenga brekafastga kepko’rdim. Kishi boshiga 100,000 so’m ekan buffet (Shvedskiy stol) ko’rinishida. Narsalar lekin uncha svejiy emas va narxiga arzimaydi. Lekin, experience uchun chidasa bo’ladi.

O’zi Trip Advisor dagi review lar ham barchasi negative ekan. Va o’sha review larni ichida manga bittasi juda maqul kelgani uchun share qilishga qaror qildim. Review ingliz tilida shunaqangi chiroyli yozilganki, IELTS Writingda ikkilanmay 11 ball qo’yvorgan bo’lardim.

Xa aytganchq, eng qizig’i bugun xatfani o’rtasi bo’lishiga qaramay, parkovkasida joy qolmagan, moshina to’la, va ko’chada zo’rg’a bitta joy topdim. Va breakfastni qilib chiqayotganimizda qorovulxonadagilar parkovka uchun ham “ko’ngildan chiqarib” berishimiz so’rashgani “icing on the cake” bo’ldi.

P.s. Odatda “icing on the cake” yaxshi ma’noda ishlatiladi, lekin man quyida share qilmoqchi bo’lgan review da author shu idiomani negative fikr uchun ham juda o’rinli qilib ishlata olgani taxsinga sazovor.

So if you are ready, see the next post for the review, which I am mainly sharing here for its expressive language!
