🔆 Friend-shoring: A Strategic Shift in Global Supply Chains
#GS3 | Economy | 10 Marks Mains Perspective)

📍 Introduction
Friend-shoring is a modern supply chain strategy where companies relocate manufacturing and sourcing operations to geopolitically trusted partners sharing similar values, governance systems, and stable economies.
It aims to counter risks from trade tensions, political instability, and supply chain shocks.

📍 Benefits of Friend-shoring

1️⃣ Strengthening Supply Chain Resilience
Risk Mitigation: Reduces dependence on unstable economies.
🔹 E.g. During US-China tensions, firms like Apple shifted manufacturing to India and Vietnam.

Diversification: Expanding operations across friendly nations prevents localized disruptions.
🔹 E.g. Toyota and Volkswagen diversified component sourcing globally.

2️⃣ Enhancing Economic & Operational Efficiency
Favourable Trade Policies: Allied partners offer tariff cuts and simpler trade norms.
🔹 E.g. Trade agreements like RCEP and CEPA facilitate smoother flow.

Stable Environments: Predictable regulations ensure continuity and long-term planning.
🔹 E.g. Pfizer expanded operations in Germany and Switzerland.

3️⃣ Promoting Ethical & Regulatory Compliance
Ethical Sourcing: Partnering with nations upholding high labour and environmental standards.
🔹 E.g. Brands like Patagonia and Eileen Fisher manufacture in ethical markets.

Regulatory Alignment: Common legal frameworks lower compliance costs.
🔹 E.g. Microsoft & IBM operate in countries with data protection laws similar to their home systems.

📍 Limitations of Friend-shoring

1️⃣ Cost Implications:
Higher labour and production costs than traditional offshoring.
🔹 E.g. Textile firms moving from Bangladesh to the EU.

2️⃣ Infrastructure Challenges:
Requires time and capital investment for new facilities.
🔹 E.g. Intel & TSMC face setup delays in new semiconductor plants.

3️⃣ Geopolitical Uncertainty:
Alliances and trade pacts can shift with changing global politics.
🔹 E.g. Policy transitions like Brexit altering trade flows.

📍 Conclusion
India’s growing participation in friend-shoring represents a strategic opportunity — advancing both economic self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and trusted global integration.
By leveraging its manufacturing base, skilled workforce, and geopolitical credibility, India can emerge as a key hub in resilient, de-risked global value chains.
