🔵 South China Sea

It is an arm of western Pacific Ocean in Southeast Asia.

It is south of China, east & south of Vietnam, west of the Philippines and north of the island of Borneo.

Bordering states: China, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam.

It is connected by Taiwan Strait with East China Sea & by Luzon Strait with Philippine Sea.

In Headlines: Mauritius Oil Spill - A japanese bulk-carrier ship which was carrying fuel oil has split into two parts in south-east Mauritius.

Important Info:

Mauritius is situated just above the Tropic of Capricorn, in the south of Indian Ocean.

Mauritius is a member of the African Union, Indian Ocean Rim Association and the Indian Ocean Commission.

It is also a founding-member of the ‘Small Island Developing States’ (SIDS).

India is Mauritius’s largest trading partner and has been the largest exporter of goods and services since 2007.

Mauritius is the second largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for India after Singapore.

🟣 Brahmaputra river

In Headlines : China to build a major dam on the Brahmaputra.

It originates from Mansarovar Lake in Tibet, which is also a source of the Indus and Sutlej.

In the Tibet region, it is known by the name of Yarlung Tsangpo. It enters by the names of Siang and Dihang in India.

And after it is joined by its two main tributaries, Dibang coming from the north and the Lohit coming from the east and enters the Assam valley where it is called the Brahmaputra.

The Brahmaputra drains into the Bay of Bengal before forming a huge delta along with the Ganga.

Most of its course lies outside India.

Major Tributaries:
Left bank: Dibang /Sikang, Lohit, Burhi Dihing, Dhansiri, Suma, Kapilli.

Right bank: Subansiri, Manas, Teesta, Sankosh, Kameng, Raidak, Jaldhaka.

Major Projects associated - Tawang Hydel Power Project, Subansiri Lower Hydel Power Project, Teesta Hydel Power Project.

Important Dams built on the Brahmaputra Basin: Subansiri, karbi Langpi dam, Teesta dam.

🟢 Mahanadi River

The Mahanadi River system is the third largest of peninsular India and the largest river of Odisha state.

Its basin extends over states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha and comparatively smaller portions of Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

It is bounded by the Central India hills, Eastern Ghats and by the Maikala range.

Origin: It rises from a place near Sihawa in Bastar hills in the state of Chhattisgarh.

It drains into the Bay of Bengal.

Tributaries :
Left bank: The Seonath, the Hasdeo, the Mand and the Ib.

Right bank Tributaries: The Ong, the Tel and the Jonk

Puri, at one of its mouths, is a famous pilgrimage site.

🟣 Red Sea

It (also the Erythraean Sea) is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia.

The connection to the ocean is in the south through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden.

To the north lie the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez (leading to the Suez Canal).

Bordering countries are:
Eastern shore: Saudi Arabia, Yemen
Western shore: Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti.

🟣 Kaveri/ Cauvery river

In Headlines : According to Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, the strict enforcement of lockdown has reduced the pollution in Cauvery River.

The river flows primarily through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

It rises in the Brahmagiri range near Cherangala village of Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka and drains into the Bay of Bengal.

It is bounded by Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats and by the ridges separating it from Krishna basin and Pennar basin.

Cauvery basin extends over states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and UT of Puducherry.

Tributaries: • Left Bank: the Harangi, the Hemavati, the Shimsha and the Arkavati.

• Right Bank: Lakshmantirtha, the Kabbani, the Suvarnavati, the Bhavani, the Noyil and the Amaravati.

On the Cauvery, lies the “Grand Anicut dam” said to have been constructed by Chola King in 1st century A.D.

Important dams : Krishna Raja Sagara dam, Mettur dam.
