𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑 𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒:

✍️ by vikramjajuha

STARTING XI:

Sanchez - 7: Made a brilliant save from a header in the second half. Solid display overall.

James - 9 [MOTM]: Goal and an assist in a display littered with quality and composure on and off the ball.

Chalobah - 7: Sloppy first half in his passing but showed much more composure second half.

Acheampong - 8.5: Didn’t put a foot wrong, kept Awoniyi quiet and scored a perfectly placed header to give Chelsea the lead.

Cucurella - 8: Another solid performance from the Spaniard who was never really put under any pressure.

Lavia - 6: Struggled to get going, looking a bit rusty.

Gusto - 6: Sloppy passing at the start and grew into the game until his silly second-yellow.

Santos - 6: Another who never really got going - didn’t manage to impose himself physically although should’ve scored in the first half.

Garnacho - 5.5: Kept going up against Williams but never really got the better of him.

Neto - 9: Showed too much pace and quality when getting to byline in lead up to first goal, followed by his free-kick that was too much for Sels. Showing real consistency.

Joao Pedro - 8: Kept the ball ever so well even when struggling for service in the first half.

SUBSTITUTES:

Caicedo - 7: Didn’t have much involvement but his presence alone gave Chelsea much more steel.

Gittens - 6: Didn’t do much on the ball, came clutch defensively on an occasion though.

Guiu - 7.5: Gave a real injection of pace and purpose to the attack - helping lessen the burden on Pedro too. Solid cameo.

Estevao - 6.5: Looked ever so exciting on the ball again.

Tosin - N/A

🗣️ Enzo Maresca on Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest [A] in the Premier League:

🤝 “First half we struggled a little bit.

“Off the ball we were good, but on the ball we made some mistakes and conceded chances to them.

“My message at half-time was the way we were pressing was good, but on the ball we were not good enough. We were sloppy in the build-up. Second half we adjusted something tactically and we were better.

“For sure we can do better in terms of the red card, that was a mistake at 3-0, we can avoid that, but at the same time the desire from the players not to concede a goal was important also. In the last four or five minutes they were shouting to each other, ‘don’t concede, don’t concede’.“

🔝 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟-𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:

“At the moment it’s about protecting players. We already knew Romeo [Lavia] was not going to play 90 minutes. The plan was 45 minutes for Romeo. Moi [Caicedo] cannot play 90 minutes, so the decision was to start with Moi or Romeo. Romeo needs a boost, needs to start a game, so that was planned.

“[Alejandro] Garna did a fantastic game against Liverpool, so was good to give him another chance. Jamie [Gittens] was okay when he was on. Marc Guiu was good.

“Also, we planned the game expecting them in a back four, not back five. Joao Pedro is better as a nine against a back four, not a back five. If you remember West Ham away and Fulham at home, we played Liam Delap against a back five. So at half-time we changed, and we were better.”

Former Liverpool director of scouting and recruitment Dave Fallows is likely to join Chelsea in a senior sporting leadership role.

The 45-year-old is in discussions with the club and would be expected to work in partnership with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, and co-directors of recruitment and talent Joe Shields and Sam Jewell.

His responsibilities would be expected to include scouting, player pathways and football development.

Fallows left Liverpool in October 2024 after spending 12 years at the club. He delayed his departure in order to help with the transition of the new football leadership team.

The Englishman helped install Liverpool’s data-led approach to player recruitment, which was introduced following Brendan Rodgers’ appointment as manager in 2012, and oversaw the signings of crucial modern Liverpool figures such as Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Alisson.

Prior to joining @Liverpool_Always, Fallows held roles at @Manchester_City, @Newcastle_United and Bolton Wanderers.
