Essugo’s transfer flew under the radar, but he could prove to be one of the most underrated signings of the season if Lavia replicates his usual absence.

João Félix at Chelsea honestly could’ve been something special, but timing and circumstances just didn’t go his way. With Cole Palmer stepping up the way he did, it was always going to be tough for Félix to truly shine. The two just couldn’t play together — not because of talent, but because their roles clash too much. If I were Félix, I would’ve seen that and looked for a move earlier, in which he did. It just wasn’t meant to be.

Palmer is clearly our guy now, and with him in that No.10 role, I doubt we’ll ever go for another creative playmaker in that mold again. So yeah, in the end, signing Félix felt more like a response to all the Gallagher transfer drama than a well-thought-out plan.

No hard feelings though — João is pure talent and still has so much to give. Wishing him nothing but the best in whatever comes next.

• Nice words from Maresca, but truth is, he won’t achieve that with the current sporting directors gambling on raw prospects. PSG have a proper core —with a mix of experienced players who’ve been at the top level for years. Chelsea? We're stacking the squad with ex-City teenagers hoping they all turn into the next Palmer.

• Palmer worked — yes, and credit to him — but it’s naive to think it’ll be that straightforward with everyone else. Not every signing is going to click like that. Without a solid spine of proven quality, Maresca’s “spectacular” project will stay a dream.

• Chelsea have added Liam Delap, Darío Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Andrey Santos to a talented young squad. But the emphasis is on 'young' and it has been crying out for some quality and experience, particularly in key moments. We will judge at the end of the window.

• This first window was always going to be a bizarre one and no doubt some clubs have tried to charge a 'CWC tax'. However, the end line is Chelsea once again have looked amateurish on a number of levels through the publicity and voracity of media briefs and updates.Again, this was a short window and there is still plenty of time to rectify this and sign the quality. But it will be another massive failure for the directors to not achieve this by September, particularly as Enzo Maresca himself has commented on the lack of experience.
