The Government of India launched a mobile app developed in public-private partnership to bring the people of India together in a resolute fight against COVID-19.

About:

The App, called ‘AarogyaSetu’ joins Digital India for the health and well-being of every Indian.

The App, available in 11 languages, will enable people to assess themselves the risk for their catching the Coronavirus infection. It will calculate this based on their interaction with others, using cutting edge Bluetooth technology, algorithms and artificial intelligence.

The app detects other devices with Aarogya Setu installed that come in the proximity of that phone.

The app can then calculate the risk of infection based on sophisticated parameters if any of these contacts is tested positive.

The App will help the Government take necessary timely steps for assessing risk of spread of COVID-19 infection, and ensuring isolation where required.

CHALLENGE COVID-19 COMPETITION (C3)

National Innovation Foundation – India (NIF), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India has come up with a call inviting innovative citizens to participate in its Challenge Covid-19 Competition (C3).

About:
All interested innovators are welcome to participate with their creative ideas and innovations for problems or issues like reducing transmission of Corona virus.

Ideas are also invited for gainful engagement of people at home, healthy food for nutrition and boosting immunity specially at the time of lockdown when raw materials are limited.

The selected technological ideas and innovations will be supported for incubation and dissemination. The competition announced on 31st of March will accept entries on a rolling basis until further notification.

VERAVAL FISHING HARBOUR
The countrywide lockdown forced by the COVID-19 pandemic has left thousands of migrant fishermen from Andhra Pradesh stranded at the Veraval fishing harbour on the Saurashtra coast in Gujarat, one of the country’s largest.

About:
Veraval is a municipality and the headquarters of Gir Somnath district in Gujarat. It is also known for the hub of fishing industries in India.

Gujarat, as the country’s largest seafood producer, draws thousands of migrants, called “Madrasis” locally, from Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam to work on mechanised fishing trawlers from August to April every year.

The Railways’ Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala has become the first PSU to came out with a prototype ventilator that has an original design and will cost a fraction of what regular ventilators cost.

About:
The prototype named Jeevan will now go for final testing at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) before being put to production to aid the country’s fight against COVID-19.

The heart of the device is the compressed air container to work the Ambu bag with air without any moving parts like servo motor or piston or link mechanism.

EXERCISE NCC YOGDAN

National Cadet Corps (NCC) has offered a helping hand to civilian authorities in the country’s fight against COVID-19 by extending the services of cadets under ‘Exercise NCC Yogdan’.

About:

It has issued guidelines for temporary employment of its cadets to augment relief efforts and functioning of various agencies involved in battling the pandemic.

The tasks envisaged for NCC cadets include, manning of helpline/call centres; distribution of relief materials/medicines/ food/essential commodities; community assistance; data management and queue & traffic management.

According to the guidelines, cadets should not be employed in handling of law and order situation or for active military duties or at hot spots. Only Senior Division volunteer cadets above 18 years of age will be employed.

The NCC, which operates under Ministry of Defence.

🔅MPLADS
As a part of Government’s continued efforts to contain spread of COVID 19, the Union Cabinet has decided to suspend Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) fund for two years (2020-21 and 2021-22).

These funds will be used to strengthen Government’s efforts in managing the challenges and adverse impact of COVID19 in the country.

An amount to the tune of 7900 crore rupees will be accumulated and deposited in the consolidated Fund of India to fight COVID-19.

MPLADS was launched in It was implemented by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

🔅ORDNANCE FACTORY BOARD (OFB)
The Ordnance Factory Board under the Ministry of Defence is ready to roll out modified tents in the form of low cost isolation units to check the Covid-19 pandemic. These tents are being assembled at Ordnance Factory Kanpur.

Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) is a defense contractor owned by the Indian government. OFB comprises forty-one ordnance factories.

Government is planning to make it into Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), which is 100 per cent Government owned. Corporatisation of OFB will bring OFB at par with other DPSUs of MoD and will provide operational freedom and flexibility to OFB which it presently lacks.

🔅HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE
The Government of India has decided to ease its ban on the export of hydroxychloroquine, a drug that has garnered global interest in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19.

About:
• Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial drug option, considered less toxic than chloroquine, and prescribed in certain cases. Doctors also prescribe hydroxychloroquine for patients of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

• However, several countries source the drug from India. By March 21, Trump had begun to call the drug a “game changer”, and has since been pushing it.

• At the end of last month, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) issued an advisory recommending the use of hydroxychloroquine in asymptomatic healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients.

• India decided to ban exports of the drug on April 4. Subsequently, US President Donald Trump tweeted about “retaliation” if India did not heed his request for the drug.

• But now, government decided to ease the ban. India said it would supply to countries that needed it the most, and to neighbours who were “dependent on India’s capabilities”.

Union HRD Minister has launched a web-portal YUKTI (Young India Combating COVID with Knowledge, Technology and Innovation) in New Delhi.

It’s a unique portal and dashboard to monitor the initiatives of HRD Ministry – in academics, research and social initiatives – taken in the wake of COVID-19.

This portal will help in critical issues related to student promotion policies, placements related challenges and physical and mental well-being of students in these challenging times.

The portal will also allow various institutions to share their strategies for various challenges because of coronavirus.

It will also establish a two-way communication channel between the Ministry of HRD and the institutions so that the Ministry can provide the necessary support system to the institutions.

A recent article published in the journal Science has shown that the drug candidate remdesivir, on trial now, exhibits promising activity against the COVID-19 causing virus and might work well in retarding virus replication.

Remdesivir (development code GS-5734) is an antiviral medication being studied during 2020 as a possible post-infection treatment for COVID-19 illness.

Remdesivir is a nucleotide analog, specifically an adenosine analogue, which inserts into viral RNA chains, causing their premature termination.

🔅KALARIPAYATTU
The Kerala Tourism has geared up for the post-COVID-19 era by coming up with six theme-based microsites (including one on Kalaripayattu) in the official website to promote destination and tourism products.

About:
• Kalaripayattu also known as Kalari, is an Indian martial art and fighting style that originated in Kerala.

• It is considered to be among the oldest martial arts still in existence, with its origin dating back to at least the 3rd century BC.

• Kalaripayattu includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry and healing methods. Practitioners of Kalaripayattu also possess intricate knowledge of pressure points on the human body and healing techniques that incorporate the knowledge of Ayurveda and Yoga.

• Unlike other parts of India, warriors in Kerala belonged to all castes. Women in Keralite society also underwent training in Kalaripayattu, and still do so to this day.

There are two major styles within traditional Kalaripayattu. These are:
• Northern style (Vadakkan Kalari) from the Malabar region in northern Kerala: It is based on elegant and flexible movements, evasions, jumps and weapons training.
• Southern style (Thekkan Kalari) from southern Kerala: It specializes in hard, impact based techniques with priority on hand-to-hand combat and pressure point strikes.

Odisha’s Ganjam district administration has banned the Meru Jatra festival and congregations related to it at temples on the occasion of Mahavishub Sankranti, which is also start of the Odia New Year.

• The Attorney General for India is the Indian government's chief legal advisor, and is primary lawyer in the Supreme Court of India.
• He is appointed by the President of India on advice of Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and holds office during the pleasure of the President.
• Any person qualified to be a judge of the Supreme Court can be appointed for the post.
• The Attorney General has the right of audience in all Courts in India as well as the right to participate in the proceedings of the Parliament, though not to vote.

According to India Child Protection Fund (ICPF), online child pornography traffic after the lockdown in India has gone up by 95% as compared to average traffic before the lockdown.

The spike in consumption indicates “millions of paedophiles, child rapists and child pornography addicts have migrated online, making the Internet extremely unsafe for children”.

India Child Protection Fund (ICPF) was set up in January 2020 and aims to support NGOs with funding resources for curbing exploitation of children. The fund is managed by Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi’s son, Bhuwan Ribhu.
Under Section 15 of the POCSO Act, a person who stores child porn for commercial purposes shall face imprisonment for up to 3 years or will have to pay a fine or face both punishments.

🔅FDI FROM NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES
In a move that will restrict Chinese investments, the Centre has made prior government approval mandatory for foreign direct investments from countries which share a land border with India.

Previously, only investments from Pakistan and Bangladesh faced such restrictions.

The revised FDI policy is aimed at “curbing opportunistic takeovers/acquisitions of Indian companies due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.”

A non-resident entity can invest in India, subject to the FDI Policy except in those sectors/activities which are prohibited.

However, an entity of a country, which shares land border with India or where the beneficial owner of an investment into India is situated in or is a citizen of any such country, can invest only under the Government route.
