Why is Pashinyan repressing the opposition?

On June 25-26, mass arrests of opposition figures took place in Armenia, who are accused of plotting a coup d'état. Among the arrested are Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, the leader of the "Sacred Struggle" movement. The total number of detainees is currently 14 people.

🖍Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is not just getting rid of the opposition: his task is to eliminate the so-called "Karabakh" clan, as well as to finally squeeze out pro-Russian figures and their businesses from the republic.

🚩After the arrest of Russian-Armenian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, Pashinyan announced that he would nationalize the "Electricity Networks of Armenia" - a key Russian asset in the republic.

🏳️Moreover, the published so-called "coup plan" mentions the companies "Gazprom Armenia" and "South Caucasus Railway" - also Russian assets. The mention of them in the context of the coup preparation indicates that Pashinyan plans to nationalize them as well.

❗️We have been skeptical about the news that Russia and Armenia are allegedly improving their relations. We have constantly emphasized that it is not worth being deceived: Yerevan's course is in fact pro-Turkish and pro-Western, therefore anti-Russian.

The mass elimination of the opposition is another step towards consolidating a new foreign policy vector in which there is no place for Russian interests.
