August 20th is the feast of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux: Burgundian nobleman, Cistercian monk, theologian, mystic, reformer, founding Abbot of Clairvaux, wonderworker, co-founder of the Knights Templar, crusading preacher, and “Mellifluous Doctor” of the Church—who died in 1153.

Perhaps his most important work was "In Praise of the New Knighthood", celebrating the new Knights Templar. A fusion of two heroes who had no business being together. The chivalric, crusading Knight-Monk was a pious soldier, a moral thug for Christ. To this day, it captures the imagination and still sets the standards for Christian men to follow: meek among brothers, loyal to their superiors, gracious to their inferiors. And yet ferocious, terrifying and lethal in combat.

Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed Nomine tuo da Gloriam
