Thanks to mutual aid and solidarity, the RICO case has not succeeded in accomplishing that goal.

Centrist democrats must understand that any support or leeway that they offer the Trump administration or the police in the wake of the death of Charlie Kirk will not make them safer. The entire apparatus of "law and order" will be turned against them as well as against those it has always harmed.

Jair Bolsonaro and his allies have been convicted of attempting a coup after losing the 2022 elections. This is the first time those responsible for a coup attempt in Brazil have been convicted in a country that has suffered more than a dozen.

Modern autocrats have learned how to rig democracies in order to remain in power, as Orban, Putin, and Erdoğan have done and Trump is attempting to do. That's why the president of the US has imposed economic sanctions on Brazil and on individual judges to push for an amnesty.

The punishment of the coup plotters may suggest that it is still possible to stop these dictatorial plots via the courts. But Bolsonaro's greatest crimes were sabotaging health measures and using the pandemic as a weapon against the population, all of which remain unpunished.

Neither the preservation of the democratic system nor having the left in power actually solve our problems. In the state of Bahia, for example, governed by the Workers' Party for 20 years, police kill more people every year than they do in the entire United States.

The fascism that Bolsonaro and his allies represent won't be stopped by imprisoning him. Other forms of authoritarianism remain on the streets and in public office.

We have to break this cycle from below.

JD Vance and Stephen Miller capitalizing on the shooting of Charlie Kirk to plan a crackdown on a wide range of their opponents is directly out of the textbook that Adolf Hitler used to consolidate power.

We must not simply identify this as fascism—we must act accordingly while there is still time.

One simple step is to make sure that every political faction that does not desire to live in an autocratic society understands that anything less than total resistance to the crackdown means complicity. Democratic politicians must not be permitted to sit on the fence. Their complicity must be clear to all.

The crackdown that JD Vance and Stephen Miller are planning is not the result of anything that radicals or leftists did. Protestations of innocence and statistics about who is more violent are beside the point. They have been planning a crackdown regardless. It's part of their playbook.

It has been 14 years now since the beginning of Occupy Wall Street. The participants were protesting the grievous disparities in wealth and power that capitalism has created.

These disparities are the root cause of today's crises—autocratic control of the state, the media, and the resources that everyone depends on for bare survival. The existence of billionaires is itself fundamentally authoritarian, as it grants a few people tremendous power at everyone else's expense.

Barack Obama and the other politicians who presided over the brutal suppression of the Occupy movement are responsible for preventing us from addressing this problem before it reached this point. Today, we desperately need a much fiercer anti-capitalist movement.
