The Soap Nuts Experiment is complete.
What are Soap Nuts?
A nut that can be used as a natural laundry detergent alternative. Complete non-toxic for you and the planet. Plus, they are easy to use, have no smell, and are super cheap.
I bought a large bag of soapnuts September 26, 2023 and just used the last of the detergent from them on October 20, 2025.
My laundry detergent costs for washing 755 days of laundry, 2-5 loads every day, was 36.97.
How to Use:
I experimented with different ways I wanted to do this.
I settled on a system with 2 quart jars
1 jar with a handful of nuts (+/-8) and boiling water
steep (This becomes the concentrate for the other jar.)
Like tea, the liquid will become darker and darker. I'd pour a little of the concentrate into the other jar and add water to get to the color of weak tea. At that time, I'd also top off the concentrate jar with water. Keep making "concentrate" until the "concentrate" becomes the light color of the target detergent — then just use this up.
