"Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s defiant pro-democracy newspaper that drew the ire of China’s leaders, said it would print its final issue Thursday, ending an era of unfettered reporting critical of Beijing in the city’s mainstream print scene."
Apple will not die!

The 26-year-old newspaper Apple Daily has finally come to an end due to the asset freezes by the Hong Kong government. Last week, hundreds of police raided Apple Daily’s office and arrested five Apple Daily senior executives over allegations of “collusion with a foreign country”. HK$18 million (around €1.9 million) worth of assets were thus frozen which made it impossible for Apple Daily to pay their staff.

Apple Daily has always been the most outspoken pro-democracy printed media in Hong Kong, and has served as a critical voice to speak out for Hongkongers, creating a space for the free expression of opinions, which contradicts Beijing’s agenda. The shutdown of Apple Daily marked an epic fall of the freedom of press in Hong Kong, as it is the first time in history that the authorities froze the assets of a media agency with over 800 employers in the name of National Security Law. It is foreseeable that the next banned media will be Stand News, HK Citizen News and other smaller pro-democracy network media outle that strive to report the truth, which is seen as a threat by the autocratic regime.

We would like to thank the hard work and effort of the journalists from Apple Daily. Thank you for standing fast and remaining as the fourth power in the society even in the darkest days. Thank you for persisting in the faith of freedom of press and representing the voices of the Hongkongers until the very last moment. An apple might fall to the ground and die today, but its seeds will grow countlessly someday in the future. Let us be the seeds.

“I came to Hong Kong empty-handed. I gain everything due to the freedom in Hong Kong and now I would use my life in return for the freedom.”
Jimmy Lai, the founder of Apple Daily, now serving a 20-month sentence in jail under the National Security Law
[01.07.21 Berlin Protest: Against the Totalitarian Party]

Hong Kong is occupied by China since 01.07.1997. Nowadays, Hong Kong is undergoing a series of surpressions, like the set up of the
National Security Law, the imprisonments of a large number of protesters and members of the Legislative Council, and the forced shutdown of the largest pro-democracy press media in Hong Kong, Apple Daily. It is unavoidable that Hong Kong is gradually turning into a police state which is under the total control of China.

Nevertheless, not only the Hongkoners suffer under the rule of China, but also other ethic groups. This year is also a special year for all, as it’s the 100th year of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Until today, it has ruled China for over 70 years. It's never a reason to celebrate the centennial of the CCP, as countless of ethnic groups, religious groups, democracy advocates, and dissidents are imprisoned, tortured and even lost their lives under its leadership.

We, Hong Kongers, Uyghurs, Tibetans, Southern Mongolians and Chinese will gather in front of the Chinese Embassy in Berlin at 10 a.m. on the 1st of July to mourn for our sufferings. Please bring some white flowers and wear black on that day.

[01.07 Protest against the 100th Year of the Chinese Communist Party]

24 years ago, on 1st of July, 1997, Hong Kong was handed over to China from Britain. It was claimed that Hong Kong was “returning to her motherland”. Beijing promised a high degree of autonomy, rights and freedom for Hong Kong with the principles of “one country, two systems” for 50 years following the handover of the city.

But today, we see that the promises are all lies, lies that are being exposed in our everyday lives. As Hong Kong is apparently seen as a gargantuan threat to the stability of China, the Chinese government has determined to crush dissent wherever its voice is raised. Over the course of the year since the enactment of the National Security Law, the elected pro-democracy leaders at the Legislative Council and District Councils, have either been thrown in jail or fled to foreign lands. And just last week the largest pro-democracy media outlet, Apple Daily, was forced to shut down after the arrests of its editor-in-chief and top executives and a government freeze on its assets on grounds of the NSL.

Today marked the 24th year of handover of Hong Kong, and we are witnessing that we lost all our freedom and rights. We risk losing our culture, our language and our identity.

It is an occupation, a modern colonisation.

History repeats itself. As the Chinese community celebrate the 100th year of CCP today, we Hongkonger, along with Tibetans, Uyghurs, south Mongolians, and many others, are reminded of the tyrannies we have been subjected to. They tried to erase our identities and our values. And therefore we stand together in solidarity, to shout out to the CCP, that we are not afraid. Sooner or later, we will gain our land and freedom back.

Some people moved on, but not us and never will be us. 大家飲多d水,我哋全民自救,打破宿命,光復香港,時代革命。

Germany Stands with Hong Kong is a grass-root group standing for democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. We are an independent voluntary group without receiving financial support. Your kind support is important to our campaigns in promoting the democracy of Hong Kong.
Short Description:

In 2019, the national “extradition bill” threatened Hong Kong’s autonomy by turning legal jurisdiction over to mainland China. As a response, mass protests emerged in the city and it shortly evolved into a movement aimed to preserve Hong Kong’s state of relative independence. Having its debut in the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in France, the documentary “Revolution of Our Times” tells the story of the Hong Kong Democracy Movement to a world that had seemingly forgotten them and puts the viewer in the midst of the political battlefield during the time of the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests. The film also won the Best Documentary Feature at the Golden Horse Film Awards in Taiwan.
