朝鲜提出的条件是除他和助手，其他所有人员都是朝鲜的。要严格按照朝鲜提供的剧本拍，不能拍摄任何未经批准的场景，不能同演员和其他朝鲜人交谈， 每天的拍摄结果要上交审查。曼斯基知道自己的幻想破灭了，但他还是答应了。
开始后，曼斯基发现他所拍摄的一切都是假的。故事以一个小女孩珍美的生活为主线，她父母的职业、生产技术革新、表彰大会，珍美加入少年团、参加舞蹈队、演出、骨折，包括笑容和吃饭，一切都要符合剧本的需要。
曼斯基为了保留下真实影像，他利用朝鲜人对设备不熟悉的漏洞，采用不关机、两个存储卡等办法偷拍。他还模仿维尔托夫29年拍摄《持摄像机的人》的方法，用一个摄像机吸引人们注意，另一个摄像机偷拍。
他还要防备朝鲜人偷偷检查他的设备和窃听，总之，历经千难万险他将几百小时的素材带出朝鲜，剪辑成了《太阳之下》，并在很多地区上映。
事后朝鲜多次邀请曼斯基回来，说有重要的事情与他协商，每次邀请都不忘最后说一句“珍美非常想念你”（文字来自X）
