This afternoon, the UK Parliament held a debate on “Pro-democracy Campaigners: Arrests.” During the session, Leeds MP Mark Sewards raised the issue of Chloe Cheung, founder of the HongKongers in Leeds, who has recently been targeted by the Hong Kong government with a HK$1 million bounty on her head. He questioned the Under-Secretary in the FCDO, Catherine West, on what measure the UK government would take to ensure the protection of Chloe and other Hongkongers from transnational repression.
Two weeks ago, we called for supporters to write to their local MPs. It is likely that today’s contribution from Mark Sewards MP is a result of this letter-writing campaign successfully bringing the matter to his attention.
We would like to thank everyone who took part in writing to their MPs. We also urge all Hongkongers to continue to raise important issues with their MPs. There are still many topics that need to be brought to MPs for follow-up and debate. Let your elected representatives bring the matters you care about to Parliament for discussion. 🚨 The ETA Issue Needs Your Support
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is not a visa but a travel permit. However, for those fleeing political persecution, the requirements for an ETA may result in unnecessary delays or barriers. In other countries like Canada and the US, there have already been cases where individuals were denied ETAs or visas due to their participation in peaceful protests. If such situations were to occur in the UK, it could have a severe impact on asylum seekers.
We urge you to write to your MP, asking the UK government to review its ETA policy and ensure that the rights of British National (Overseas) (BNO) passport holders to enter the UK are protected.

Year after year, Hongkongers persist
4th June 1989 was a beginning—it exposed the Chinese Communist Party’s violent crackdown on protests and its utter disregard for the voice of the people. The anti-extradition movement in Hong Kong in 2019 was a continuation— CCP has never stopped its oppression of the people.
For Hongkongers in the UK, the June 4th vigil carries even deeper meaning. Witnessing how Hong Kong has completely lost its freedom of assembly—where even striking delivery workers become targets of authoritarian repression—we know there’s so little room for protests in Hong Kong. Hongkong diaspora overseas have taken on a new responsibility: to carry forward the spirit of Hong Kong’s resistance.
The June 4th vigil represents Hongkongers’ unyielding commitment to the pursuit of democracy and freedom. Over the past 36 years, many have carried this burden—some have dropped out along the way, while others have joined. We hope to see you join this path of upholding Hong Kong’s spirit this year. We will also continue to commemorate June 12th—so let’s step forward during these weeks in June to resist authoritarianism together.

🔹 2024年11月30日
列斯手足連線於市中心設立街站期間，一名中國籍男子向我哋投擲飲品，並即時致電中國駐英大使館求助。由於未獲協助，該男子隨後被警方拘捕，但當日即獲釋放。
🔹 2024年12月1日
West Yorkshire Police（WYP）通知我哋，因證據不足將不作檢控。我哋強烈反對，並指出有錄音證據顯示該男子親口承認曾投擲飲品，惟仍被拒絕受理。
🔹 2024年12月4日
我哋對警方決定表示極度失望，要求再次會面，警方其後答應安排。同日，@onyoursideuk 亦加入協助另外再與警方溝通。
🔹 2025年1月29日
我哋透過 Victims’ Right to Review（VRR） 正式申請要求重啟調查程序。
🔹 2025年2月4日
我哋聯同街坊與警方會面，當中包括列斯區域指揮官，明確指出事件屬於跨境政治打壓與襲擊，並非單純種族歧視或仇恨行為。

United beneath the umbrellas，unyielded in the rain — never forget 12 June
Umbrella - They were our only defence — unarmed and vulnerable — against the brutal force of the police. The umbrella came to symbolise not just our courage in resistance, but also the fragility and resilience of the powerless standing up to tyranny.
Umbrella shield- Though one umbrella offers little protection, countless Hongkongers stood side by side to form a shield — a line of defance built from the strength of our shared convictions, united to protect one another.
It has now been six years since 12 June 2019. Many Hongkongers have been forced into exile, scattered across the world. Yet the meaning of the umbrella shield still lives on in our hearts — each individual may only hold limited power, but when we come together, we can still stand strong in solidarity.
Yesterday, on 7 June, HongKongers in Leeds formed an umbrella shield at Briggate in the city centre— a tribute to those who stood firm on 12 June and a public reminder of the struggle for Hong Kong. It was also a warning: that the Chinese Communist Party’s influence is creeping into the UK, and we must remain vigilant.
We remember 12 June.

[Meet Your MP: Morley Surgery with Mark Sewards MP]
Although many Hongkongers who have come to the UK are not British citizens yet, we still enjoy the right to vote and Members of Parliament, as representatives of their constituents, have a responsibility and duty to serve every resident in their constituency. Every resident’s voice deserves to be heard and represented.
Hongkongers in Leeds are pleased to invite Mark Sewards MP to hold a dedicated surgery session for Hongkongers. We hope this opportunity will allow him to better understand the concerns and views of our community.
Mark Sewards MP has consistently support Hongkongers. He not only personally attended our June 4th vigil but also raised issues in Parliament, including transnational repression and the planned Chinese "super embassy," questioning the Labour government’s response.
If you are facing difficulties in your daily life — such as with visas, social security, healthcare, or education — or if you wish to share your views on the current government or its policies, or raise an issue you hope to bring to Parliament, you are very welcome to attend this meeting.
Seating is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
This session is open only to residents of the Leeds South West and Morley constituency. Please register in advance to reserve your seat. Walk-ins are welcome if spaces are still available.

Mark Sewards MP will be holding a special surgery session for Hong Kongers next Saturday in Morley, where many members of the community live.
Alongside him, we have also invited Alison Lowe OBE, West Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, to attend. If you have questions or concerns about UK policy or local safety, this is a valuable opportunity to speak directly with relevant officials.
Issues you may wish to raise include:
– Questions about the immigration policy change from 5+1 to 10+1
– Local safety or policing concerns
– Healthcare, education, or other public services
This is your chance to let your MP know what matters to you. He may be able to assist directly, or raise your issue in Parliament.
Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Interpreting support will be available at the event, so you are welcome to speak in Cantonese.
