🚀🚀Last week, I had a unique set of lecture days apart from finalizing our Chest X-ray imaging dataset curation, which happened from Monday, June 30 to July 3, we had an incredible workshop at Menelik II Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, engaging with residents from Black Lion Hospital and St. Paul Millennium Medical College. Under the guidance of renowned Professor Mark Guelfguat and his dedicated medical students, we explored advanced cross-sectional cardiac imaging techniques.
🫁🫁This workshop highlighted a significant gap in our current radiology curriculum, particularly in cardiac imaging. With only a few private centers beginning to offer ECG-gated CT scanners, it’s clear that we need to elevate our training and resources. Cardiac imaging is often viewed as the domain of cardiology, yet it is a shared field where collaboration between cardiac radiologists and cardiologists is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
✨⚡Over the past 7-8 years, cardiac surgery in Ethiopia has shown promising growth, led by two exceptional cardiac surgeons. We believe that integrating advanced cardiac CT and MRI into our practices will enhance surgical planning and post-operative follow-up.
💯💯The lectures were insightful, featuring case reports directly from NY Jacobi Albert Einstein Hospital, which opened our eyes to the importance of meticulous imaging in identifying subtle cardiac lesions. We gained valuable knowledge on ECG gating for CCTA and the CAD-RADS reporting system, enabling us to differentiate between stenosed and non-stenosed CAD and assess who may require further intervention.
💢💢Despite having access to 64-128 slice CT scans, government hospitals are not yet fully utilizing these resources. With further training and onsite observerships, we are committed to establishing a robust cardiac imaging service supported by our allies from Jacobi Medical Center in collaboration with Tiru-Rad diagnostics Jacobi Medical Center
🤝🤝Our visiting team, including Dr. Mark, Moshe Gordon, Abraham, and Alan, enjoyed a city tour and left with a renewed sense of hope for advancing modern radiology in our underserved population. This is a testament to the excellent administration Lemi Mamo ,Dr Teketel and Amsalu at MIICSH and our collective vision for a brighter future in radiology education, improving healthcare service and practice. Excellent assistant in organizing the event was also monumental from Cell healthcareSelam Genene, Blue health medical consultancy Binyam Alemu, MD, and our research assistant,Michael A. Negussie, MD Daniel Cherkos, MD. I sincerely appreciate all including our residents next to N.Y Jacobi Albert Einstein center for this generous and incredible gesture. The partnership will escalate to bigger venues to solve our local infrastructure and operator problems.
🖥️Together, let’s continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in cardiac imaging, modern Radiology, and improve healthcare outcomes for our communities! 🚀

Ayder Short-Term Surgical Program | 50 New Smiles, One Incredible Mission
From June 19–29, Operation Smile Ethiopia led a transformative short-term surgical program at Ayder Hospital in Mekelle, bringing together over 50 passionate medical volunteers from across the country and beyond.
Operation Smile Ethiopia is part of the global Operation Smile family, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free, safe, and timely cleft lip and palate surgeries, as well as comprehensive cleft care including nutrition, speech therapy, dental support, and psychosocial services.
During this campaign, 80 children were screened and 50 received life changing surgery. Every child’s smile restored was a step toward better health, dignity, and opportunity.
This mission was not only about surgery, it was about hope, equity, and the power of collaboration.
Thank you to the dedicated volunteers, partners, and supporters who made this possible.
