Kastner train passengers on their way to Switzerland and on their arrival, 1944. This rescue operation saved the lives of over 1,600 Jews from Hungary during WWII. The train left Budapest and ultimately arrived safely in Switzerland after a large ransom was paid to the Nazis.
Jefferson Shields, former body servant and Confederate veteran who fought in the Stonewall Brigade during the Civil War, c. 1910s. He attended many Confederate reunions and was buried with a military grave marker that reads "Jefferson Shields, Pvt. Co. H 27th Va. Inf., Stonewall Brigade, Confederate States Army".

29 May 1453: Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, falls to the Ottoman Turks under Mehmed II after a 53 day siege. The fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Byzantine Empire, and effectively the end of the Roman Empire, a state which dated back to 27 BC and lasted nearly 1,500 years.
