2 June 455: King Gaiseric and the Vandals sack Rome, claiming a broken betrothal between his son and the Roman emperor’s daughter was a violation of their peace treaty. Upon the arrival of the Vandal army at the gates, Pope Leo I requested that Genseric not destroy the ancient city nor murder its inhabitants. Genseric agreed and the gates of Rome were opened.
