Armin Wegner, a German soldier and medic who was stationed in the Ottoman Empire during WWI. He was a key witness to the Armenian genocide and the photographs he took documenting the plight of the Armenians form the core majority of the photographic evidence we have today of the genocide. Later during WWII, he denounced the persecution of Jews, and was subsequently arrested, tortured by the Gestapo and imprisoned. Upon his release he fled to Italy.
Johannes Brahms in 1853. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Brahms was a well known composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period.
