The two bar charts illustrate the number of individuals in European urban and rural places who were disturbed by the noise pollution caused by traffic, trains, aircraft, and industry during the day and at night in 2007. Overall, most people in cities suffered from noise compared with their counterparts in the countryside. Specifically, traffic caused the most noise, among other sources. Interestingly, industry did not cause any noise in rural places.
In 2007, traffic noise impacted the most people. The number of individuals in cities who complained about it was 64 million during the day and 48 million at night, which was about twice as high as that in rural areas (34 million during days and 24 million at nights). In contrast, the remaining noise disturbances affected a relatively small number of urban and rural residents. The figures for trains were about 10 million and 8 million during the day and 8 million and 6 million at night, in cities and the countryside, respectively. Noise from aircraft and industry affected fewer than 4 million people, with industry effecting the fewest individuals (1 million during the day and 0.25 million at night in the city, while 0 in the countryside).
