Wanna be able to perform well in exams? Go take as many mock tests as possible though, only after you have solved the remaining two problems - difficulty of materials and your overall English level.
You can, at least, force yourself to do it in timed conditions once a week.
As far improving the GENERAL ENGLISH is concerned, do not give a sh*t about the exam results until you have this robust English.
