The tables provide data on the number of international students from China, the USA, and India studying in Canada and the United States in 2002 and 2003. The figures also include the total number of students and the percentage change for each group over the period.

Overall, the total number of international students rose in both countries, with Canada experiencing a more substantial increase. While most groups saw growth, Indian students in the USA were the only group to witness a decline. Despite Canada’s notable rise, the USA remained the leading host country for international students in both years.

In Canada, the total number of international students increased significantly from 59,870 in 2002 to 70,004 in 2003. Chinese students formed the largest group among the three nationalities, rising sharply from 5,400 to 7,850β€”a 45% increase. American students in Canada also grew in number, from 5,000 to 5,450, marking a modest 9% rise. Indian students, while fewer in number, recorded a notable 35% increase, climbing from 2,100 to 2,835.

In contrast, the USA saw more modest changes. Chinese student numbers grew by 6%, from 110,000 to 116,600, while the number of Canadian students rose from 31,000 to 33,170, representing a 7% increase. However, the Indian student population declined by 9%, falling from 200,000 to 182,000. Despite this drop, the total number of international students in the USA still rose slightly, from 581,600 in 2002 to 592,230 in 2003β€”an overall growth of 2%.

The table shows the average time, in minutes, allocated to three various leisure activities – TV/video/radio, Reading and Sports, while the bar chart details the amount of time, also measured in minutes, spent on household chores – cooking and dishwashing, shopping, repairing and washing and ironing clothes – by men and women in 2008.
Overall, men consistently spent more time on the leisure activities than women, except for reading, which was more popular with females. Notably, TV/video/radio received significantly more minutes than the other two activities among both genders. In addition, women spared more time on all types of household tasks compared to men, with the exception of repairing.
Focusing on the average daily minutes spent on leisure first, TV/video/radio topped the chart among both men and women, consuming 137 and 118 minutes, respectively. The other two activities received considerably less time. Reading, for instance, took 18 minutes daily for men and 19 minutes for women, while the figure for sports among males, at 15, was higher compared to 11 minutes for females.
As for household activities, women consistently recorded higher figures than male counterparts, especially in cooking and washing dishes, at roughly half an hour for men and nearly 80 for women. The time spent on shopping and washing and ironing clothes was also more prolonged among women than men, though it took less than half the time than cooking and dishwashing among females. Repairing was an outlier in the chart, as men tended to spend more minutes than women in this category, with men – at nearly 20 minutes – spending twice as much time as women on this activity.

The table details the average distances, measured in kilometers, covered using seven different modes of transport in 1977 and 2007. Overall, car, train, and taxi usage rose over the 30-year period, while walking, buses, bicycles, and motorcycles declined. Notably, cars remained by far the most widely used form of transport in both years.

In 1977, cars made up the longest average travel distance, at 3,500 km, followed by trains at 900 km and taxis at just 400 km. By 2007, the average distance traveled by car more than doubled to 7,100 km. Train usage saw a modest rise to 1,000 km, while the distance covered by taxis doubled to 800 km.

In contrast, the popularity of buses fell slightly, from 500 km to 400 km. Walking experienced a similar decrease, declining by 100 km to 300 km. Meanwhile, bicycles and motorcycles both dropped marginally from 100 km to 90 km over the period.

The table gives information on the temperatures and the hours of daylight in two particular cities in the same week in May 2007.
The table details the temperatures and the times of sunrise and sunset in Mumbai and Moscow on three consecutive daysβ€”Friday, Saturday, and Sundayβ€” in May 2007.

Overall, the temperatures were considerably higher in India than in Russia over the weekend studied, with the highest temperature recorded on Saturday in Mumbai and on Sunday in Moscow. Notably, Moscow experienced more hours of daylight on all three days, yet the temperatures there remained lower compared to Mumbai throughout.

Focusing on Mumbai first, the figures remained relatively stable over the period. The maximum temperature reached 33 Β°C on Friday and Sunday, and 34 Β°C on Saturday, marking the highest temperature. However, the minimum temperatures remained unchanged at 29 Β°C. As for the duration of daylight, the sun rose at 6:00 from Friday to Sunday, while the sunset, recorded at 19:05 on Friday and Sunday, occurred 10 minutes later on Saturday.

In comparison, the temperatures were significantly lower in Moscow than in Mumbai. The maximum temperature experienced a consistent increase from 8 Β°C on Friday to 13 Β°C on Sunday, while the minimum dropped from 5 Β°C on Friday to 2 Β°C on Saturday, before soaring to 13 Β°C on Sunday. The sunrise occurred earlier than in Mumbai, between 4:05 and 4:15, and the sunset, too, was recorded later, at 22:00 across the three days.

Task 2
Some people believe that it is more important to teach children the literature of their own country than other countries.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is a popular view that children should learn the literature of their own country rather than international literature. While I acknowledge the hardships of studying foreign literature, I am convinced that the advantages, such as better social cohesion and personal growth, outweigh the challenges.

Admittedly, studying international literature entails high pressure on children. Children often fail to comprehend poems and novels, as they have a limited understanding of the language and the culture. This lack of comprehension forces children to spend additional time and effort for higher marks in literature lessons, rendering the whole learning process exhausting. My primary school classmate Kuzi, for example, used to spend several hours at school after lessons learning Russian literature to catch up with other students, which he often complained about, as he had to sacrifice time to play with peers.

Having said that, teaching the literature of foreign countries offers significant social benefits. One major advantage is building cultural connections by presenting foreign cultural values and lifestyles through literature. A case in point is Japan, a forward-thinking country that promotes west-eastern connectivity through literary works. By studying the works of William Shakespeare, for instance, whose novels and plays describe the lifestyles of English people, Japanese children gain valuable insights into the English culture, which they can compare with their own. This policy enables Japanese students to have a multifaceted perspective on life, thereby proving the efficiency of teaching international literature.

Equally essential is personal growth that comes from learning new literature. When children are exposed to a diversity of literary works, they can significantly enhance their vocabulary by learning new words and phrases. Numerous Central Asian schools, for example, tend to include the Russian language and literature in their curricula, which helps children acquire the language from a young age. Although the initial stages of learning may be demanding for children, in the long term, studying the literature of other countries helps them demonstrate strong language skills, which justifies sacrificing a small portion of free time for education instead of play.

In conclusion, while teaching children the literature of foreign countries may initially seem more stressful and leave less time for other activities, I still believe that it offers more benefits than drawbacks. Not only does international literature improve social cohesion, but it also helps children improve language skills, turning them into well-rounded members of society in the long run.

The line graph illustrates the percentages of goods exported to four countries from Australia between 1990 and 2012. Overall, exports to Japan and the USA declined to a similar extent, whereas the opposite trend can be observed for China and India, both of which experienced growth of varying levels. Notably, China recorded the most significant change over the period.

Two out of the four countriesβ€”Japan and the USAβ€”saw decreases in their shares of Australian exports. Japan fell from around 25% to about 19%, while the US figure declined from approximately 11% to 5%, both representing drops of roughly 6%.

By contrast, exports to China and India rose, though at different rates. China’s share surged from under 5% to nearly 30%, making it the most dramatic increase in the chart. India, on the other hand, grew modestly from nearly 0% to around 5%, though it reached a temporary peak of about 8% between 2005 and 2010.
