🔴 In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in. ▪️What are the reasons for this? ▪️How can people research this? Cambridge 16, test 1.
Have you ever tried to discover your home’s history? Apparently, this kind of research has gained in popularity in some countries, and many wish to know more about the history of the building or the house they reside in. The reasons for this are not difficult to relate to, and finding such data is quite straightforward in today’s world.
Some people embark on this research purely out of curiosity. Many of us find it intriguing to know when our home was constructed, who built it, who lived there before we moved in, or even what happened to them. So interesting are some of these tales that few can resist not listening to them. This interest coupled with the means that technology has provided are encouraging more and more people to do such research.
Others, however, might draw on this information for practical purposes. Discovering the history of one’s home can be of great help when renovating or performing other tasks of this nature. Imagine you intend to remove a certain wall from your apartment; you can do this much faster and safer if you know how old the building is, the materials used, or whether the building will remain structurally sound after the removal.
To access such pieces of information, you can easily surf the net, looking for city directories and architectural plans. City Directories are an excellent source for finding out the occupancy history of your home and the context of its neighborhood, while architectural plans will inform you on specifications of the design, calculations, and other documentation. It is also worth mentioning that this research might have already been done and published online by someone else, in which case there is little left for you to do.
To sum up, finding out about the history of the place you live in is an interesting activity. We usually carry out this research because we are curious or there is a practical need for it. Luckily, it is much easier to obtain such data these days given all the technological tools at our disposal.

The line graphs depict changes in the percentage of electrical appliances owned by households in a country and how many hours per week people spent doing chores inside their homes from 1920 to 2019, a 99-year period.
Overall, the percentage of households with electrical appliances increased, while the number of hours allocated to housework plummeted over the period.
With regards to owning electrical appliances, almost nobody possessed a refrigerator in 1920, while in 1980 there was a fridge in every single home, which remained unchanged for the rest of the period. The figures for washing machine and vacuum cleaner stood at 40 and 30 percent respectively at the beginning of the period. These percentages rose over the next 40 years and reached 60. Over the remainder of the period, the figure for vacuum cleaner saw a sharp increase to reach a high of 100 percent, but the one for washing machine reached just over 70 percent in the final year.
Regarding the number of hours per week spent doing house chores, the figure stood at 50 in the first year. This number declined steadily over the 99 years to hit a trough of 10 hours.
