The 6 Levels of Knowledge

1. Al-'Ilm (العلم) – Knowledge – which is to comprehend the reality of something as it truly is, with Yaqeen (absolute certainty).

2. Al-Jahl ul-Basiť (الجهل البسيط) – Minor Ignorance  – which is absence of full and complete comprehension.

3. Al-Jahl ul-Murakkab (الجهل المركب) – Compounded Ignorance – which is to comprehend something in a way contrary to its true reality; e.g. a person is ignorant and he is ignorant of the fact that he is ignorant.

4. Al-Wahm (الوهم) – Delusion – which is to think that one comprehends something despite the presence of that which should cause you to realise that you are incorrect.

5. Ash-Shakk (الشك) – Doubt – which is to think that you comprehend something, yet you are aware of something contrary to it which you think has the same possibility of being the truth.

6. Adh-Dhann (الظن) – Presumption/Assumption – which is comprehension of something, despite the presence of something which is contrary to it, but which is less likely to be true.

The Definition of al-Ghuluw (الغلو)

Extreme exaggeration; it is to go beyond the limit with regards to worship, actions or praise - which can be either positive (الثناء مدحًا) or negative, ya'ni: dispraise (الثناء قدحًا)

The Categories of al-Ghuluw

1. Al-Ghuluw in Aqeedah (الغلو في العقيدة) – such as the extreme exaggeration of the People of Kalam (اهل الكلام) (theological rhetoric) with regards to the Attributes of Allah, which caused them to fall into likening Allah to His Creation (التمثيل) or outright denying His Attributes (التعطيل)

2. Al-Ghuluw in Acts of Worship (الغلو في العبادات) – such as the extreme exaggeration of the Khawaarij who declare disbelief (Kufr) upon the Muslim who commits a major sin.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum; the ghuluw of the Mu'tazilah who claim that the Muslim who commits a major sin is in a station between two stations, ya'ni, he is neither a believer nor a disbeliever.
And similarly, the ghuluw of the Murji'ah who claim that commiting sins does not affect one's eman.

3. Al-Ghuluw in Transactions (الغلو في المعاملات) – such as going to severe extremes by making everything unlawful (haraam), or by going to extremes in negligence by making everything permissible (halaal) including ar-ribaa (الربا) and al-ghish (الغش) ya'ni: cheating, treachery, lying and such-like under the guise of bettering the economic state.

4. Al-Ghuluw in Cultural Customs (الغلو في العادات) – such as those who stubbornly hold on to (blameworthy) traditions and who refuse to move forward and modernise.
But at the same time, it is better for one to remain upon what is good and beneficial from his culture and customs as opposed to adopting the foreign ways and mannerisms of the disbelievers.
