The InvestGame team is pleased to release the Q1'24 Global Gaming Deals Report, offering insights into the gaming industry's current market dynamics.

Despite minimal growth, significant layoffs, and volatile stock prices, seed investment remains stable, showcasing resilience amidst market volatility. Series A and subsequent rounds have declined, with a notable shift in investor focus from mobile to PC & Console platforms.

The challenging state of the equity markets continues. High-interest rates and poor performance of the publicly listed players have narrowed exit opportunities and ultimately impacted Late-stage appetite.

Meanwhile, major public companies focus on share buybacks and are not rushing to make large M&As, with many announcing layoffs and restructuring programs. Midcap M&As will likely grow amid present investor-friendly terms, PE's increased interest in the space, and improvement in gaming stocks throughout the year.

We anticipate a potential stabilization in dealmaking activity, which may exceed pre-pandemic levels. This report highlights a period of strategic recalibration, focusing on capital efficiency and sustainable growth amidst ongoing economic pressures.

We thank MY.GAMES and Taylor Wessing for their support of the Report.

Our team recently released the Q1'24 Global Gaming Deals Report, which delves into mobile and PC & console market trends in collaboration with VGInsights and AppMagic for the first time. We thank our colleagues for providing valuable data and are pleased to share our insights.
In 2023, Steam achieved a new milestone by generating approximately $8.8 billion in full-game sales, largely fueled by a robust lineup of high-quality premium releases such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, and Resident Evil 4. The start of 2024 has been promising, with year-to-date full-game sales nearing $3.5B and concurrent online users (CCU) surpassing 36 million in March.
Since the implementation of IDFA changes in April 2021, the mobile gaming market has encountered challenges starting in Q3 2021, compounded by a decline in player engagement post-COVID.
Over the past few quarters, activity has been relatively stable, with public mobile companies reporting modest organic growth, which suggests a potential ongoing recovery in the market.
On a global scale, the games industry remains under strain, marked by sluggish market growth that falls below inflation rates. Extensive layoffs, volatile gaming stock prices, and frequent project cancellations dominate headlines, adding to the industry's challenges. During Q1 '24, we saw 132 closed deals with a total value of $4.9B. Although the number of deals has decreased, the value indicates that the market is slowly recovering.
Over the past year, VCs adopted a cautious and selective approach, opting for smaller check sizes, forming syndicates with corporate venture capitalists (CVCs), and reducing the number of investments made. In Q1’24, the results seemed to surpass the previous year's quarterly figures, primarily driven by Epic Games securing $1.5B from Disney. However, excluding this deal, the amount of capital deployed was 30% lower compared to Q1’23.
— Embracer Group, a Sweden-based gaming giant, has announced its intention to dissolve into three separate publicly listed entities — Asmodee Group, Coffee Stain & Friends, and Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends;
— Zentry, a Thailand-based web3 platform, has raised $140m in funding, led by Binance Labs;
— CARV, a US-based web3 games tech company, has attracted $10m in a Series A funding round led by Tribe Capital and IOSG Ventures.

Those three deals, along with six others, were covered in our latest Weekly News Digest.
