The Helgakviða Hundingsbana II contains a reference to a lost Eddic poem at the end, the Káruljóð, when Helgi and Sigrún are reincarnated as Helgi Haddingjaskati and the Valkyrie Kára.

While no fragments of the Káruljóð survive, the narrative of Helgi and Kára survives in the Hrómundar saga Gripssonar. This is another thing which speaks to the authenticity of the Eddas; it makes no sense why two Christian scribes would fabricate and reference an Eddic poem but not include it.

Despite having a place of honour in Valhalla at the end of the Helgakviða Hundingsbana II, Helgi is reincarnated in the Káruljóð. Perhaps he, like Odysseus on Calypso’s island, was willing to trade immortality to see Sigrún/Kára once more.

Painting by Peter Nicolai Arbo, 1869. 𐃏
