Нам, конечно, очень хочется показать стул со слоновьими ножками авторства Джо Коломбо, который наверняка не все из вас видели, но хронологически правильнее предварить эту заметку рассказом еще об одном символе пластиковых 1960-х, детском стуле K4999, спроектированном Марком Дзанусо и Рихардом Заппером в 1964.
Этому пластмассовому стулу – тоже, к слову, со слоновьими ножками – предшествовал стул «Lambda», созданный в 1963 г. тем же дуэтом. В отличие от детского стула, детали взрослой «Лямбда» штамповались из стали и соединялись точечной сваркой, совсем как кузов автомобиля. Дзанусо позднее вспоминал, что, получив заказ на проектирование мебели для миланских школ, они поначалу пытались адаптировать для этих целей «Лямбду», уменьшив ее в размерах, но в тот момент истекли международные патенты на полиэтилен, в связи с чем цены на этот новый материал «ощутимо снизились».
За время работы над «Лямбдой» дизайнеры накопили обширный материаловедческий опыт, поэтому они немедленно переориентировались на новый материал и полностью пересмотрели концепцию:
«Готовый продукт, детский стул, поразил даже нас: использование полиэтилена потребовало таких конструктивных решений, благодаря которым стало возможным соединять стулья друг с другом и штабелировать их разными способами; в результате наш стул одновременно мог служить детям игрушкой, заставляя их включать свое воображение и строить из стульев замки, башни, поезда и катальные горки. В то же время стул получился в высшей степени прочным и слишком мягким для того, чтобы им можно было нанести увечья ребенку, но слишком тяжелым для того, чтобы ребенок мог его швырнуть».

We’ve been meaning to show you Joe Colombo’s famously elephant-legged chair, which some of you may be unfamiliar with, but, chronologically, it’s fitting to preface this note with another iconic plastic design of the 1960s: the K4999 children’s chair created by Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper in 1964.
This plastic chair, equally elephantine as the one by Colombo, was preceded by Zanuso and Sapper’s Lambda chair of 1959-1963. Unlike the children’s version, the Lambda had steel parts stamped, joined by spot welding, and spray-painted, much like a car body. Zanuso later recalled that when commissioned to design furniture for Milanese schools, they initially tried to adapt the Lambda by scaling it down. However, just then, international patents on polyethylene expired, causing prices for the then-novel material to experience a “notable drop”.
Having extensively experimented with materials while working on the Lambda chair, the designers swiftly pivoted to polyethylene and reconsidered their initial concept:
“The final result, the Child’s Chair, surprised even us; because of the various stacking possibilities we had developed as a result of structural requirements imposed by the use of polyethylene, we had created a chair that was also a toy, which would stimulate a child’s fantasy in his construction of castles, towers, trains, and slides. At the same time, it was indestructible, and soft enough that it could not harm anyone, yet too heavy to be thrown.”

Кожевенная линия на Васильевском острове Санкт-Петербурга прежде была промышленной зоной, в которой размещались дубильни, а затем кожевенные заводы и даже ситценабивные фабрики - из-за сильного запаха Екатерина II постановила перенести такие предприятия подальше от центра Петербурга. Благодаря таким пространствам, как "Севкабель Порт" и квартал "Брусницын", за последние годы район Кожевенной линии превратился в культурный кластер, в котором проходят здоровские выставки, фестивали и другие мероприятия.
Одним из таких мероприятий станет бесплатная выставка-продажа интерьерной и предметной керамики DECOR & DESIGN 4CERAMICS, которая пройдет на ближайших выходных в "Брусницыне". Да-да, проект 4Ceramics, покоривший уже несколько городов России, наконец докатился и до Санкт-Петербурга! Мы пишем об этом событии на правах искренней рекомендации, поскольку прекрасно знаем и любим Лизу Солоницыну и ее коллег по проекту и даже думали подготовить информационный стенд о керамике середины прошлого века, но не успели к началу выставки.
Как и прежде, Лиза собирает под одной крышей изделия лучших керамистов России, как чисто декоративные, так и функциональные: чашки и тарелки, дизайнерские вазы и кашпо, уникальные светильники, элементы сервировки и аксессуары - все они будут экспонироваться как арт-объекты в компании своих авторов. В общем, мы считаем это событие важным и для наших друзей из 4Ceramiсs, и для Петербурга и очень надеемся на его успех. Глядишь - может быть, выставка станет регулярной, и к следующему разу мы-таки доделаем свой стенд :)

Kozhevennaya Liniya on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg used to be an industrial zone housing tanneries and - later - leather and even calico printing factories. Due to the strong odor emanating from tanneries, Catherine the Great decreed that such enterprises be moved farther from the center of St. Petersburg. Today, thanks to Sevkabel Port, Brusnitsyn, and other exhibition venues, the area has transformed into a cultural cluster that hosts awesome exhibitions, festivals, and other events.
This coming weekend, Brusnitsyn will be home to one such event, an exhibition of interior ceramics called DECOR & DESIGN 4CERAMICS. Yes, 4Ceramics, which has already toured several Russian cities, has finally made its way to St. Petersburg! This post is definitely not an ad but a wholehearted recommendation to attend this fair because we know and admire Elizaveta Solonitsyna and her colleagues and, for a few years now, have been happy to share 4Ceramic's updates with you, free of charge, because we support their mission to promote Russian ceramics. This time, Elizaveta even suggested that we put together our own section on mid-century ceramics, but we were completely swamped to be able to complete it in time.
As with previous exhibitions and fairs, Elizaveta invested an enormous effort into bringing together Russia's best ceramicists and their products that range from purely decorative to functional pieces: cups and plates, designer vases and planters, unique lighting fixtures, tableware, and accessories. All of them will be displayed as artworks accompanied by their creators. We truly feel this is an important event both for our friends at 4Ceramics and for our home town and we very much hope it will be successful. Who knows, perhaps the exhibition will become a regular occurrence in our city, and by the next one, we'll finally have our section ready :)
