Jesting the Lion: Humour in Modern Ethiopia presents spoken and written Amharic jokes from 1855 until 2019, enhanced with English translations and contextual references that make them accessible to non-Amharic speakers as well. The book shows how ‚č‌äwata’, the term that stands for ‚humour‘, has served as an indirect medium of communication between various Ethiopian rulers and the public, with a focus on #AddisAbeba.

#Ethiopia | የልማት ተነሺ ተብሎ ሰዎች ድንገት ቤታቸው ሲፈርስ ስለገጠማቸው ጉዳት ብዙ የሚያሳዝኑ ታሪኮች ሲነገሩ ሰምቻለሁ። ነገሩ ቢያሳዝነኝም፣ የስሚ ስሚ አይቼ ሳልመረምር አስተያየት ብሰጥ ሚዛናዊ አልሆን ይሆናል፣ እሳሳት ይሆናል በሚል ከማዘን በስተቀር ምንም አላልኩም ነበር፣ አሁን ግን ለልማት ድንገት መፍረስ የሰውን ልጅ ሲያፈርስ በዓይኔ አየሁት።

የማወራው ስለአንድ ሰው ታሪክ ነው፣ ተቆጥሮ ህዝብ ስለሚባለው፣ ሀገር በማቅናት ውስጥ ማህበረሰብ በመስራት ውስጥ አስተዋጽኦ ስላለው አንድ ሰው ነው።

የህይወት ታሪኩ እንዲህ ነው ...

ገና ጎረምሳ እያለ ከተወለደበት ገጠር ወጥቶ 250 ኪሎሜትር በእግሩ ተጉዞ አዲስ አበባ ገባ። አዲስ አበባ የግለሰቦች ንግድ ቤት ተቀጥሮ ከጽዳት አንስቶ የተለያዩ ስራዎችን ሰርቶ ከራሱ አልፎ ወላጆቹን ቤተሰቡን ረድቶ፣ ትዳር መስርቶ፣ ልጆች አፍርቶ፣ የግል ንግድ ከፍቶ ሲኖር ቆይቶ የዛሬ 60 ዓመት አካባቢ ከፈረንሳይ ኢምባሲ ወረድ ብሎ ከሃይዌዩ ድልድይ ስር የግንብ ግድግዳ ላይ “ስንኖር ኢትዮጵያዊ ስንሞት ኢትዮጵያ” የሚለው ጽሁፍ በደማቁ በቀይ ቀለም ከተጻፈበት ፊትለፊት ወደ ቤላ በሚወስደው ቀኝ መታጠፊያ መንገድ ላይ መሬት ገዝቶ ቆንጆ ቤት ሰርቶ ኑሮውን መሰረተ......
