Are you interested in #decolonialurban studies and energy transitions? We have funding for 2 students who will be registering for the MPhil Urban Studies at the African Centre for Cities, UCT in 2025. The scholarship is funded by DANIDA as part of the 'Claims to Energy Citizenship in South Africa' project which focuses on energy transitions.
Successful applicants will be required to design their dissertation research in alignment with the themes and aims of the broader CLAIMS project.

The beautiful eastern town of Dire Dawa was founded in 1902 when it became impossible to lay the Ethio-Djibouti railway line via Harar because of the steep access to the town.
As the railway project progressed, the town also developed, attracting a diverse population of Greeks, Armenians, and Arabs who opened hotels and shops. This once great imperial railway company, during its early operations, provided landlocked Ethiopia access to the sea via Djibouti. Currently, the old railway line only operates between Dire Dawa & Dewele, a border town between Ethiopia and Djibouti.

Yimtubezina Museum showcases Ethiopia’s storied history, hidden treasures
"The museum, over 124 years old, was initially the private residence of Yimtubezinash Habete, a distinguished merchant and national patriot during the reign of Emperor Menelik II. Yimtubezinash, the sister of the renowned patriot Shemelish Habete, made her own mark in history, actively participating in the resistance against the Italian invasion in 1936.
Today, the museum is maintained by her fifth-generation descendants, serving as a permanent exhibition space in the capital."

The Grenfell Inquiry report on the causes of the fire at the 24-storey tower, which led to the deaths of 72 people on 14 June 2017, was published today. It revealed that Studio E, the architect commissioned to refurbish the tower, was to blame for ‘significant’ failings on the project.
