🌷 Idag firar vi Valborg i Skandinavien som är en mycket gammal högtid som troligtvis härstammar från Segerblotet, där vi firar att våren nu är kommen. Själva brasan har i nutid även kommit att kallas för Majbrasa, vilket beror på att vi också firar maj månad – vårens ankomst.

🌷 Många förknippar dagens Majbrasa och Valborgsfirande med det katolska helgonet Walpurgis från Englands 700-tal. Dock har denna traditionsenliga högtid föga gemensamt med helgonkulturen, Walpurgis har ingenting med Valborgseldarna eller våren att göra eftersom det är en kontinentalgermansk sedvänja av mycket äldre ursprung som forskare idag erkänner är helt och hållet hedniskt. Även i Baltikum och övriga Norden firas vårens inträde och sommarens början med väldiga eldar: Mayfestival/Majfest och Beltane...- fortsättning i kommentar nedan ⬇️

↟ Tales from the Fjeld, Theodor Kittelsen 1857 –1914 🇧🇻

Theodor Kittelsen was a Norweigan artist, known for his paintings of Norwegian nature and folktale creatures. This particular painting is from the novel 'Hvidebjörn kong Valemon'. Kittelsen used the Norwegian nature as inspiration and illustrated and wrote many folklore tales, and is acclaimed as a national artist in Norway.

↟ Sweden during the 1960s 🇸🇪 Native Scandinavians from Sweden celebrating Skolavslutning. In Sweden, the Skolavslutning is an important tradition to take part in before children can bid their classes farewell.

The Skolavslutning is the end-of-term ceremony which takes place in schools all over Sweden in the summer (Sommaravslutningen). Students are unmissable in their suits and white dresses, often accompanied by the student cap, some in folk costumes and decorated with medals, trinkets, and MANY Swedish flags.

After the ceremony, parents often go for picknic together and play games with the other families. A beautiful way to welcome summer and the long summer holiday that awaits for the children. There is about 840 different varieties of folk costumes just in Sweden – and did you know there's a Scandinavian tradition to sew our own traditional folk costume from the area where your kin originates from?

The old tradition of wearing folk costumes is slowly coming back again, and today they are often worn at occasions such as weddings, during our Scandinavian traditions, National Day, folk festivals etc.

Today is the National Day of Norway (Constitution Day). The 17th of May year 1814, the King Christian Frederik signed the country's constitution. It began with a short period of independence for Norway before the union with Sweden came to begin the same year, but which then came to be dissolved in 1905. May 17th is a holiday and official flag day that is celebrated extensively in Norway, and many people are wearing their traditional folk costumes.

Norway is a constitutional monarchy where the reigning King, Harald V of Norway, is the country's head of state. Since January 17th in 1991 he has been King, and his successor to the throne is Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, who is also third cousin with the King of Sweden, Carl Gustaf XVI. Like in a time long forgotten – but what if I told you it's not? This is for real and this is now. This is the Leksand folk costume that originates from Dalarna in Sweden, one of few folk costumes that can be paired togehter with a version for children.

The child version is called 'Gulkolten' – a yellow costume characteristic for Leksand that goes together with a red apron, a shawl and a bonnet. Dalarna is the region in Sweden with the highest density of traditional folk costumes, and the Leksand costume is especially known for its vibrant colors and beautiful embroidery typical of the area.

The Sutton Hoo lyre is a Anglo-Saxon instrument that was discovered during the excavation of a ship burial site at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, England in 1939.

Many Scandinavian folk-songs have throu ancient times been written about Spring, and this one in particular, is about the month of May. The Scandinavian people have learned to adapt and live in harmony in all our four seasons of the year due to ancient -and current traditions like rituals, blót, celebrations and music.

↟ Happy Constitution Day, Denmark! 🇩🇰 Since the 5th of June 1849, Denmark became a constitutional monarchy and received its first democratic constitution. Today, Danes celebrate constitutional celebrations in Denmark and raise the Dannebrog.

Dannebrog is the name of the Danish flag, and the legend says that it fell from the sky to Valdemar Sejr's troops during the battle of Lindanäs in Estonia year 1219, 15th of June. It is the oldest national flag in the world, still in use today. Dannebrogen means "Danish clothes" or "well processed fabric." The cross design was first used on the Danish flag, which was then also taken over by the other Nordic countries.
