Bishop Job (ROCOR, Germany) issued a statement in July of this year regarding the candidate for the German Federal Constitutional Court, Frauke Brosius-Hersdorf, who is a supporter of abortion. Bishop Job’s critical statement was published on the website of the Berlin-Germany Diocese of ROCOR and on the Synod’s website, and it may have contributed to the public criticism that ultimately led Brosius-Hersdorf to withdraw her candidacy.
IMPORTANT! We cite His Grace’s words on contraception because we consider it important to clarify that in Orthodoxy there is no absolute prohibition on non-abortive contraception, as in Roman Catholicism. Nevertheless, we wish to remind that it is regarded more as a concession. The ideal of a large, many-children family is celebrated in the Psalms of David, and our tradition views a large family as a virtue. Therefore, if we feel capable, we should strive toward this ideal!

This was our first prayer service in January 2021. This Planned Parenthood “clinic” is permanently closed now!
Our recent post with a quote from ROCOR Bishop Job about non-abortive contraception received some feedback from our subscribers, including some critical responses. We were therefore very interested to learn about this new book from Patristic Nectar and have already ordered it.

“While I can’t wait to read this new book and explore the arguments, I believe that Bishop Job is correct, and here is why. There are many families in which only one spouse desires to live a church life. Such situations did not exist in such large numbers in the time of our ancient and medieval Saints, who shaped our Tradition. Today, families with only one believing spouse require pastoral care, and the Orthodox Church seeks to provide it. Otherwise, these couples may face separation, since a spouse who does not share the faith — for example, one who insists on using contraception — may simply choose to leave. We believe that preserving the family should take priority even over such an important matter as becoming parents.
It is worth noting that this is what we call oikonomia — a concession to human weakness. It is not the ideal. It is wonderful when God Himself directs parenthood, but we should not force couples into divorce when they cannot achieve unity on this issue.
Of course, this also requires ongoing education — both from church speakers and within families — to ensure clarity about which forms of contraception are abortive and which are non-abortive.”

Prayer for children to the Mother of God ☦️
O Most Holy Lady Theotokos, save and protect under Thy shelter my children (names), all maidens and youths, and infants, both baptized and unnamed, and those who are carried in the womb. Cover them with the robe of Thy motherhood; keep them in the fear of God and in obedience to their parents. Entreat my Lord and Thy Son that He grant them what is profitable for their salvation. I entrust them to Thy maternal care, for Thou art the divine Protection of Thy servants. Amen.
