One of the off grid guys up here had a stroke about 10 years ago. He lost some big portion of his brain, doctors can't figure out how he is alive and functional. The hospital took his house and his 18 wheeler because he couldn't pay his bill. He's now driving for a local trucking company and on the cusp of retiring. He said for the first 5-6 years after the stroke doctors kept telling him he shouldn't plan to be alive in 6 months. 3 years ago he decided he couldn't live like that and started living life again.

He doesn't have any thing because the doctors and hospital took it... nor does he WANT anything they can take again... his fear is that if he has another stroke, they'll keep him alive just to probe his brain. He fears being stuck in a bad dream on life support. He showed up at the house one day with an electric motorcycle and no helmet. I fussed at him about no helmet and he said if he crashed, he wanted to deny those fuckers access to his brain.

He's just turned 62 and will retire this year. He lives in 3 shipping containers and we are setting up a solar array in his yard expressly to export to the grid so he can buy that power back at night recharging his electric truck. He wants to make deliveries part time for walmart or amazon during the day. He will have additional panels mounted on the side of 2 of the shipping containers to power his living space.
