Yesterdays piano lesson I was curious what the tuning and key a collective unscripted choir without an instrument to anchor the tuning would be in. Toronto was F, London was G and they were both closer to 432 hz than 440 hz.
I also showed the security guards laughing cuz I think the reason Jacob collier dresses silly and does those pre harmony exercises with the audience is to get them past their inhibitions. So when the crowd is turned into a choir they aren’t self conscious and just going with the flow of the sound.
Pope Gregory (Gregorian chant originator) insisted that church music was only the human voice. No instrument. I’m starting to think that’s because when singing with an instrument the voice is locked into a specific tuning.
It’s a very interesting lesson and a good follow up to the first Gregorian chant lesson.
