Romans 7

The law, here in Romans 7, means the law of Moses, and it means nothing else. It means that which was the heart of the law of Moses, the ten words given on Sinai. And his argument here is that the law has dominion over men until death ends its authority or ends their relationship to it. But he has just been showing us in the clearest possible way that we have died with Christ; therefore we died not only unto sin, but we have died to the law as a rule of life. Is this then to leave us lawless? Not at all: for we are now, as he shows elsewhere in 1 Corinthians 9:21 that we are “under law to Christ”, or “en-lawed”, that is, “legitimately subject” to Christ our new Head.

The law, as we have seen, was addressed to man in the flesh, and this was our former state, but now all is changed. We are no longer in the flesh, but (as the next chapter will show us) in the Spirit, and so in a new state to which the law in no sense applies. Again the old question comes to the fore: If all this be true shall we sin then? Are we to be lawless because not under law? By no means. The mosaic law must simply be recognized as having a special ministry but not as the rule of the new life. It is a great detector of sin.

Similarly, Romans 3:31 makes sense in context: it affirms the law’s purpose in revealing sin as seen in Romans 2-3 — whether the Mosaic Law (for the Jews) or the law (or rule) of knowing right and wrong (for all people).

This same idea appears in 1 Timothy 1:9-10: the law was not meant for believers to live under, but to expose sin and point unforgiven sinners to the Savior.

👉🏻 Are believers under the Mosaic Law? The Bible answers that clearly:

Romans 6:14: "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for YE ARE NOT UNDER THE LAW, but under grace."

Galatians 5:18: "But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."

Galatians 3:24-25: "Wherefore the law WAS our schoolmaster to bring us unto CHRIST, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, WE ARE NO LONGER under a schoolmaster."

🌟 EASY! Just like people complicate salvation, deceivers and judaizers complicate this issue as well, but there is ZERO Scriptural support for the twisted heresy that claims believers under the law. It’s a heresy the Bible rebukes over and over again.

Finally, the law was NEVER given for salvation. So to say the above verses are just about salvation shows incredible biblical ignorance. We are under a HIGHER and DIFFERENT standard than that of the old law! So choose to follow Jesus instead of the temporary law that was given to POINT TO Jesus!
