Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna

It was launched in 2017.

This scheme is a Coal India CSR funded Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) program.

It aims to provide a one-time cure opportunity for Haemoglobinopathies like Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Disease for patients who have a matched family donor.

The CSR initiative was targeted to provide financial assistance to a total of 200 patients by providing a package cost not exceeding Rs. 10 lakhs per HSCT.

The scheme has been extended to cover Aplastic Anaemia patients for a total of 200 such patients from this year.

Persistent Viral Shedding

When an individual gets infected by a respiratory virus like SARS-CoV-2, the virus particles bind to the various types of viral receptor.

Thus, Recovered patients can sometimes continue to carry low levels of virus within their system for up to three months.

These levels are no longer enough to make the person sick or transmit the disease to others, but it can get detected in diagnostic tests.

The disease developed from such persistent virus is what is called Persistent viral shedding.

Myristica Swamps

About:

The Myristica swamps are tropical freshwater swamp forests with an abundance of Myristica trees.

Myristica trees are the most primitive of the flowering plants on earth.

The evergreen, water-tolerant trees have dense stilt roots helping them stay erect in the thick, black, wet alluvial soil.

The trees form a fairly dense forest with a closed canopy.

The swamps are typically found in valleys, making them prone to inundation during monsoon rains.

Myristica swamp treefrog

Scientific Name: Mercurana myristicapalustris

These are endemic to the Western Ghats.

Rare arboreal species (Pertaining to moving about, living in or among trees).

Active only for a few weeks during their breeding season.

The breeding season, unlike for other frogs, starts in the pre monsoon season (May) and ends before the monsoon becomes fully active in June.

Before the end of the breeding season, the female frogs along with their male counterparts descend on the forest floor.

The female digs the mud and lays eggs in shallow burrows in mud. After breeding and egg laying, they retreat back to the high canopies of the tree and remain elusive till the next breeding season.

Asteroid 16 Psyche:

Asteroid 16 Psyche is located 370 million kilometers away from earth between Mars and Jupiter and has a diameter of 140 miles.

It was discovered in the year 1853 by the Italian astronomer Annibale de Gaspard and was named after the ancient Greek goddess of the soul, Psyche.

Unlike most asteroids that are made up of rocks or ice, scientists believe that Psyche is a dense and largely metallic object thought to be the core of an earlier planet that failed formation.

Psyche’s shape is like a potato which takes about five earth years to complete one orbit of the sun but only a bit over 4 hours to rotate once on its axis.

NASA’s Psyche mission:

The primary target of the Psyche mission to be launched in 2022 by NASA is to study this asteroid completely and confirm the assumptions being made by the scientists.

Psyche mission will be the first mission to investigate this metallic asteroid. Psyche spacecraft will land on the asteroid in early 2026.

As the composition of Psyche is very similar to earth’s own core, its study will also give an insight to earth’s violent history of collisions and accretion that created it.

CHEOPS (Characterizing Exoplanet Satellite) Mission

It is the mission of the European Space Agency (ESA).

It is the first mission dedicated to studying bright, nearby stars that are already known to host exoplanets.

It is to make high-precision observations of the planet's size as it passes in front of its host star.

It focuses on planets in the super-Earth to Neptune size range, as a first-step characterisation towards understanding these alien worlds.

Wolf-Rayet stars(previously called W-type stars)

They are highly luminous objects a thousand times that of the Sun.

They are a heterogeneous set of stars with unusual spectra showing prominent broad emission lines of ionised helium and highly ionised nitrogen or carbon

The surface temperatures of known Wolf-Rayet stars range from 30,000 K to around 210,000 K, hotter than almost all other kinds of stars.
