On this day, 6 August 2011, Navy Special Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Matthew D. Mason, 37, of Kansas City, Mo.; assigned to Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Dam Neck, Va.; died of wounds suffered when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter in which he was riding was shot down. He was engaged in combat operations in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. We must never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate.
