A US federal judge permanently barred the cyberintelligence firm NSO Group from accessing Meta’s WhatsApp platform, following a ruling issued yesterday. The decision also reduced a previous multimillion-dollar damages award granted to Meta in May.

Judge Phyllis Hamilton concluded that NSO Group’s spyware still posed a threat to WhatsApp users and approved Meta’s request for a permanent injunction. However, she also ruled that the original $167 million jury award was excessive and must be adjusted according to legal standards for proportional compensation, ultimately reducing it to just over $4 million.

“Today’s ruling bans spyware maker NSO from ever targeting WhatsApp and our global users again. We applaud this decision that comes after six years of litigation to hold NSO accountable for targeting members of civil society. It sets an important precedent that there are serious consequences to attacking an American company," Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp, said in a statement.
