International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Fascism has been observed since 1962 on the second Sunday of September.
World War II was the most destructive war in history, affecting 62 countries and more than 80 percent of the world's population. Fighting took place in 40 countries, and the death toll ranged from 60 to 85 million people, according to various estimates. The Soviet Union suffered the greatest losses, with 26.6 million people killed.
The main purpose of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Fascism is to combat the resurgence of this ideology. It is intended to remind us of the importance of preserving peace and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
World War II became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and independence, as well as an example of the incredible strength of the human spirit. Many films have been made about these events, telling of the courage, heroism, and self-sacrifice of the Soviet people who defended their homeland from Nazi aggression. Among these films are Boris Barnet's Once Upon a Night, Viktor Eysmont's Once Upon a Time There Lived a Girl, Nikita Kurykhin and Leonid Menaker's The Lark, Sergei Gerasimov's The Young Guard, and others.
