●5Gi is a locally designed telecommunication network that has been designed by IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras and the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology

● The project is approved by the Department of Telecommunications in India and has been provided with funding as well.

● The technology developed by Indian institutions will be an alternative to the global 5G standards and

● It has already got approval from the International Communication Unit.

● 5Gi provides a higher range at a lower frequency as compared to Standard 5G service.
National Gene Bank

● National Gene Bank was established in 1996.

It aims to preserve the seeds of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) for future generations in the form of seeds, genomic resources, pollen etc.

● It is hosted by National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi.

● It can store different crop groups such as cereals, millets, medicinal and aromatic plants and narcotics, etc.

● The NGB has four kinds of facilities, namely, Seed Gene bank (- 18°C), Cryogene bank (-170°C to -196°C), In vitro Gene bank (25°C), and Field Gene bank, to cater to long-term as well as medium-term conservation

Syngas

● It can be produced from underground coal reserves through the process of coal gasification. It is a mixture of hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

● It can also be produced from sewage, saw-dust, scrap wood, newspapers and other biomass wastes.

● Syngas can be used as a feedstock for the production of methanol, fertilisers, ammonia, urea etc.

● The syngas obtained from coal gasification can be used in a variety of applications such as in the production of electricity and making chemical products such as fertilisers.

● News
-Recently, first-of-its-kind World Health Organization (WHO) Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) inaugurated in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Purpose for establishing GCTM

● Aims to channel the potential of traditional medicine, by integrating it with technological advancements and evidence-based research.

● Set policies and standards on traditional medicine products and help countries create a comprehensive, safe, and high-quality health system.

● Support efforts to implement the WHO’s Traditional Medicine Strategy (2014-23)

Mynvax

● This ‘warm’ vaccine is being developed by Raghavan Varadarajan, Professor at the Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore in association with Mynvax, a start-up that was incubated at IISc and was co-founded by him.

● It is a unique vaccine that can be stored at 37 degrees Celsius for a period of four weeks and for up to 90 minutes at 100 degrees Celsius.

● Vaccine contains a part of the coronavirus’s spike protein known as the receptor-binding domain (RBD) that helps the virus to stick to the host’s cell.

Muntra - Unmanned Tank

● It is an unmanned remotely operated tank.

●Developed by DRDO.

● It has been launched in three variants:
Muntra-S : For surveillance
Muntra-M : For mine detection
Muntra-N : For reconnaissance in areas with nuclear and biological threats.

● It is also likely to be used in Naxal-hit areas.

● The Muntra variants have surveillance radar, an integrated camera along with laser range finder which can be used to spy on ground target 15km away – heavy vehicles or crawling men.

Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME)

● It is a radio telescope designed to answer major questions in astrophysics and cosmology.

● The telescope is a partnership between the University of British Columbia, McGill University, the University of Toronto and the Canadian National Research Council’s Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory.

● Working of CHIME Telescope:
- The CHIME telescope functions a bit differently from others used for radio astronomy. Most radio astronomy is done by rotating a large dish to focus light from different parts of the sky.

- On the other hand, the CHIME telescope comprises four massive parabolic radio antennas. It has no moving parts, and it receives radio signals each day from half of the sky as the Earth rotates.

- CHIME has a powerful digital signalling processor that works at about seven terabits per second – equivalent to a few percent of the world’s internet traffic.

- This digital signal processor reconstructs and looks in thousands of directions simultaneously.

Location: The telescope is located at Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia, Canada.

Aims to provide professionally managed services with efficiency, accessibility & transparency of highest order under one roof to service the dem&s of industry, start-ups & academia.

● It avoids duplication of effort & reduced dependency on foreign sources.

- IIT Delhi

● Significant social media firms have to appoint a chief compliance officer and have a nodal contact person who can be in touch with law enforcement agencies 24/7.

● Social media platforms will also have to name a grievance officer who shall register the grievance within 24 hours and dispose of it in 15 days.

● complaints against the dignity of users, particularly women – about exposed private parts of individuals or nudity or sexual act or impersonation etc – social media platforms will be required to remove that within 24 hours after a complaint is made

● Have to publish a monthly report about the number of complaints received and the status of redressal.

● Significant social media intermediaries- Social media companies with more than 50 lakh registered users will be considered ‘significant social media intermediaries’, as per the new norms.

● In case of noncompliance
could face a ban
if they do not comply with the new Information Technology rules.

● They also run the risk of losing their status as “intermediaries” and may become liable for criminal action if they do not comply with the revised regulations
Metaverse

● What is the news?
There is a new push in tech-firms for dominating the “Metaverse” technology. Recently Facebook renamed itself as “Meta” highlights one such push

● The “metaverse” is a network of always-on virtual environments in which many people can interact with one another and digital objects through virtual representations of themselves.

● It is combination of multiple elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality and video where users "live" within a digitally enhanced surrounding.

Why the Metaverse matters?
● It is extremely important for the future of the economy and society as a whole.
● Companies like Facebook are aiming to make it the setting for many online activities, including work, play, studying and shopping.

Term Metaverse:
● Sci-fi novelist Neal Stephenson coined the term in his 1992 novel “Snow Crash” to describe the virtual world in which the protagonist, Hiro Protagonist, socializes, shops and vanquishes real-world enemies through his avatar.

● Mixed reality technology allows real and virtual elements to interact with one another and the user to interact with virtual elements like they would in the real world.

● In a mixed reality environment, wherever you go and look when wearing MR technology, the 3D content that you encounter in the space will react to you the same as it would in the real world.

● For example, an object will move closer to you when you move closer to it and you can interact with it, e.g., Turn an object using gestures.

● Augmented reality is delivered through a handheld mobile device i.e., a smartphone or a tablet

● Mixed reality is delivered through head mounted see-through glasses.

● Best example of Mixed Reality is from the movie Iron Man (Remember interaction of JARVIS - Artificial Intelligence & Tony Stark)
