Cabin top winch and jammer mounting, screws or backing plate?

Hello, all. I'm rebuilding a sailboat and I'm planning to run all my lines to the cockpit. However, she wasn't set-up with this system originally. As far as I know, the best way to attach the new winches and jammers is to bolt through the cabin top with a backing plate inside the cabin. Maybe fill in the area with fiberglass so the roof doesn't get crushed, since it is a cored cabin. Someone I know said I can also place a solid piece of wood under the fiberglass between the two layers and to just screw the hardware into that. No bolts or backing plates. The argument being that I can remove them without another set of hands and that the force applied to said hardware is not upwards, but sideways. What do you think?

Diesel leak

So I am looking at a sailboat to purchase, end of the season and owners are motivated to sell before winter storage fees are due. They didn’t have the boat in the water this season since they live out of state and lack time. Anyway I like the boat but I noticed a diesel smell in the cabin. Plus I see some brown stains here and there on the cabin walls, not in spots related to any water leaks. I think it could be related to a diesel leak. I figure diesel evaporation in a cabin that has been closed up all summer with residue buildup on walls. Any suggestions? Bargain down the price, find the leak and then degrease/heavy clean the place, or just walk away?

join a R2AK crew in Vancouver BC

Hello,
I've been dreaming of this adventure for a few years! I want to join a crew or if nothing presents itself, enter a simple boat.
I've raced dinghies since I was a kid I was very successful in my teenage years in 420s and race in the local ILCA fleet here. I've sailed a ton of stuff from traditional to very modern cats and waspz. I've done some sailing and camping tours. I've got a 25-ft sailboat Cruise the coast in BC so far up to Desolation sound and down to Victoria from Vancouver. I'm a pretty Keen Navigator I also I'm an avid cyclist in all weather.
Is anyone in Vancouver contemplating putting a team together? I would love to join you and have a chat about the style of both that you'd like to enter and if I could be a part of your team and be a good fit.
If I were to enter a boat, lightweight Minimal, not too expensive.
I think i could contribute about 5k before my partner starts making ultimatums. As for time, I work, but I don't have kids.

Anyone else crazy enough to do this?
deadline for 2026 race is Nov 15, but honestly 2028 could be an option.

I don’t sail but I love beautiful boats. Show me more beautiful boats. Pic related, it’s the Reliance, a most beautiful boat.

Advice on getting my captain’s license?

It’s the off-season here in Michigan and I am ready to begin the process of getting my captain’s license. All the captains I know recommend US Captain’s Training, which is a local company. I called them a few months ago to get a sense of what it looks like and how much it’ll cost.

They told me it’ll be about $2K “all-in,” meaning the documentation, background and drug tests, training, materials and testing.

The thing that gives me pause is that all the training is online videos. (Plus a book of some kind, of course.)

I was hoping/expecting at least some kind of in-person, classroom-style instruction. I do well in a traditional academic environment, but I’m worried about doing this as a self-paced online course (which is what it sounds like).

I’ve got the sea time, I’m ready to do this. And I’m hoping to have my captain’s license (at least a 6-pack) by next season. So hopefully by May?

I know these things take time, so I want to get started sooner than later.

My questions to the community: is online-only training the norm? Where did you get your captain’s license and what was it like? What advice do you have in general as I begin this process?

Thank you in advance for your input! There’s a lot I don’t know at this point, so please feel free to answer questions I didn’t ask. :)

Why dont bluewater cruisers have bulbous bows?

As the title question states, i'm curious as to why smaller sailing vessels dont have bulbous bows. I understand the purpose for them on large ships is to reduce drag made by bow wave formation by creation of a disruption wave. Wouldnt you want that in a sailing vessel to increase efficiency?
