Seacoast 22

I have a line on a seacoast 22.

It is mid 70s vintage. What questions should I be asking?

I am going up to look at it in the next couple days.

Has anyone owned one? Tips, tricks, annoyances?

Suitable as a learners boat?

Ceiling height in the cuddy? I’m 6’5” and not a shrinking violet. I thought about a 12-15 foot dinghy but I’m not sure about leg room.

Tia for the feedback.

Apparently 3000 were built over a decade.

Slamming, Pumping, what do you call it?

Sailing downwind with only the furling main out 100% in 16 kts of wind, brought the main in the centre for a gybe up ahead and experienced this very loud thumping sound and vibration throughout the boat. The top of the mast was moving very sharply. It looked like the anemometer was going to jump off the top! My 11 year old came outside to the cockpit to complain, "your boat is making noises". You know it's real when they bother to come outside.

The swells were mild and I couldn't find anything obvious as to the cause, other than finding the 2 backstays felt a little loose to the touch. We sailed over 1000nm this season, including through two storms with over 34 and 55 kts gusts (the first with 40-50% reefs on both sails and the latter under motor only); and experienced nothing of the sort of thumping noises experienced today, or in any weather we cruised previously (over 4000nm on this Jeanneau).

After a few minutes, I started to veer off the wind 10-20 degrees and noticed the thumping subside but not disappear. After we finally gybed around an island, the boat went back to its normal quiet self.

Any ideas what might be the cause?

We had the mast removed last winter for maintenance and the yard installed the stern rigging "incorrectly", but only slightly: we have two lines that hold the back of the bimini SS frame at each side so it stands close to the solar arch for stability. The yard ran the mast wires behind the two lines, so they were touching and thus under additional pull -- by only 1 cm or so, mind you. A few weeks ago, I removed the lines and put them forward of the backstays so they didn't touch (as originally installed prior the mast maintenance). I checked the tape they put on the turnbuckles; and they installed everything back in the same position, so assumed everything was ok.

Otherwise, the shrouds feel tight and the mast appears correctly raked.

Can my boat do what I need ?

Hi Everyone,

TLDR: I'm wondering if I can use the boat I have for my retirement project or should I get a new one. The boat would be used to explore coastline 90% of the time with the occasional long passage.

The Boat: https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/northwind-29-paceship/

Context:

When I retire, I want to live aboard a sailboat and spend the majority of my time exploring coastlines with occasional long crossings (Atlantic, Hawaii) only when the conditions and timing are right. (Idea being to open more coastline to explore). Here's my problem. I know my boat is not Ideal for long passages. I originally bought it with the Idea that I'll learn on it and buy a another boat later.

I now realize that I'll have either the money to repair/upgrade this one and use it OR sell it right away at a loss and get a better suited boat later. I won't have the money for both unless I was able to recuperate my costs when I sell this boat which is, let's face it, highly unlikely!

The question is not if I like the boat, I actually love it. I just completed my first season sailing it. I learned a lot and it was great. I'm just worried about safety & comfort.

Oh! worth noting that I'm doing this solo.

Any advices/opinions welcome!

Thanks,

How much work are you ready to put in when buying a new used boat?

Hi all. I am looking to buy a new boat after selling mine and I'm a bit stuck. Most boats i like are around 30-35k which is just a little out of what I'd be comfortable for now. Boat I went to look at that had a good price were an absolute mess, and it looks like the good ones get snapped before i can get the chance to see them.

Now i went to look at a boat for a good price <20k that seems to have a solid base but need a bit of refreshing interiors, completely new sails, autopilot (wheel), chartplotter, diesel heater... I have not mounted any of this but it could be a good occasion to put in the work and learn more about the boat. I think overall the boat would be worth the price only if i do the job myself. If i need to pay someone then i might as well save up and get something else.

I know this is subjective but this sub helped me a lot so just hearing your ideas would be great!

Trailering dinghy

Where do I put a 19 ft mast when trailering a 12 ft dinghy?

How do I store it when traveling with it?

I've never trailered a sailing dinghy.

12ft Zuma if it helps

Considering new inverter to make coffee maker work...

May seem extreme, but just got a used Beneteau Oceanis 400, and it has solar + Magnum 2012 inverter/charger (2000VA). My nesesspro vertuo won't run on battery (I know, tons of power, 1500W, but should still work). YT says it is because it is 'modified sine wave' inverter. Looking into a new one. Currently have AGMs but considering LiFePo4 upgrades in a few years. Any suggestions on best options here?

Not really sailing, but if you've been to PV, you've seen Marigalante cruising Banderas Bay
