‘Beautiful Aden’ Phase 1 Goals Achieved, SDRPY Begins Phase 2

Aden, Yemen / 6 May 2020 – In its first month, the ‘Beautiful Aden’ Cleaning and Environmental Sanitation Campaign of the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) removed 222% of the total waste expected to be cleared in the project’s first phase, for 120,155 direct and 341,744 indirect beneficiaries of the province. The campaign has exceeded the target of 9,000 m3, removing 21,755 m3 of waste and accumulated garbage from streets and residential areas, conducting drainage operations, and irrigating trees with approximately 1,773 m3 of water.

After the most recent torrential rains caused severe damage to Aden, the campaign went beyond all planned goals and stepped up activities through tree irrigation, urgent contribution to floodwater removal, and help for Aden’s residents.

Labor productivity in the campaign has increased on average by 122% through work in 124 blocks at 82 job sites, and average working hours for the program’s equipment and machines has equaled roughly 9 hours per day, with distance traveled exceeding 30,000 km to and from 476 work points. 45 work teams from the Cleaning and Improvement Fund of Aden (CIFA) and civil society organizations have participated.

To raise environmental service efficiency in Aden, the program has provided the city with 22 pieces of heavy machinery and 220 garbage containers, giving full support to CIFA, the responsible provincial authority for environmental sanitation. The program’s equipment and machinery have removed and disposed of waste from main roads and residential areas long neglected and infested due to the spread of disease. The campaign has increased CIFA’s capacity and efficiency by 77%.

In the first phase of the project, the campaign targeted Aden’s most needy areas, then expanded work to include 41 workdays in six districts. ‘Beautiful Aden’ has encouraged afforestation and improvement of the urban landscape, using specialized irrigation vehicles provided by the program to water greenery in six districts. Six water tankers – each with a capacity of 5,000 liters – worked in 18 shifts.

Campaign participants form teams from civil society organizations aiming to spread civic consciousness, explaining and educating on hygiene and environmental sanitation. The campaign has stimulated civic involvement by enabling Aden’s sons and families to participate alongside civil society organizations, which play a big role in the supervision of cleaning teams, adherence to schedules, delineation of targeted areas, performance of field surveys, updates of data and completion of work forms.

SDRPY devised an emergency plan to repair damage from torrential rains that occurred during the campaign, coordinating with participants to unblock drains and remove high volumes of floodwater that had closed several main roads. The emergency operation removed 4,316 m3 of rocks and waste and cleared 1,173 m3 of water from main roads and neighborhoods in 5 days at an average of 12 continuous working hours a day.

The campaign operates according to an established mechanism to assign and manage work, including field operations management, supervision and direction, to monitor daily quality and efficiency, and to evaluate the extent to which the campaign’s plans and goals are being implemented on a daily and weekly basis.

‘Beautiful Aden’ has raised community awareness and prompted behavioral change, encouraging residents to stop littering and randomly disposing of waste. Furthermore, civil society organizations at all levels are inspiring increased appreciation for a healthy environment and sustainable cleanliness in Aden province.
The ‘Beautiful Aden’ Campaign is part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s continuous support to the people of the Republic of Yemen in all Yemeni provinces, and fulfillment of the plan of SDRPY, which aims to extend economic and development support in all fields, contribute to improved infrastructure and basic services, and create job opportunities for all Yemenis. SDRPY works to meet basic needs and achieve results that directly benefit the citizen. This is done by forming strategic partnerships with the Yemeni government, local authorities and civil society organizations, and through needs assessments, renovation, rehabilitation and capacity-building support in key sectors.

Supplies State-of-the-Art Ambulance

Hajjah, Yemen / 13 May 2020 – The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) in Hajjah Governorate has delivered a fully equipped ambulance to the Saudi Hospital in Hayran as an extension of the program’s health sector support, which includes field monitoring and evaluation of projects previously launched in the province. The ambulance is equipped to the latest specifications, with all the features that facilitate and speed access to urgent care, helping to protect patients facing heightened health issues and requiring greater service efficiency and safety.

The ambulance delivery follows SDRPY’s assessment of the province’s needs for basic services, prioritized in coordination with local authorities, and current global health challenges call for increased support to the Saudi Hospital in Hayran, which serves 23,000 beneficiaries and an average of 80 patients per day.

An official signing ceremony took place at the Saudi Hospital in Hayran in the presence of Hajjah Deputy Governor Nasser Daaqeen, Deputy Governor for Tuhama Affairs Muhammad Sabbar, Midi Directorate Chief Ali Saraj, Hayran Directorate Chief Hamad Rabeea, and SDRPY Hajjah Office Director Eng. Ahmed Madkhali.

SDRPY’s activities in Hajjah Governorate include field visits by program specialists to verify that the coronavirus pandemic is not adversely affecting ongoing projects, and also to monitor previously launched educational projects, such as the construction of two-storey schools fully equipped by SDRPY. One such school is the 12-classroom King Faisal bin Abdulaziz School in Hayran, accommodating more than 600 students; the other is the 9-classroom Ali bin Abi Talib School in Midi, serving 400 students.

Saudi Arabia Continues Proactive Development Measures in Yemen During COVID-19 Pandemic

Yemen / 3 June 2020 – Since its first presence on the ground in Yemen in May 2018, SDRPY has tackled health, environmental and other crises with development projects and initiatives in cooperation with the Yemeni government and local authorities, sharing experiences with relevant international and local organizations to arrive at best practices of direct benefit to the Yemeni citizen. With needs in Yemen now increasing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, SDRPY continues its operations.

SDRPY projects are helping to raise health and environmental standards and limit the spread of coronavirus, providing modern laboratory equipment to hospitals and medical centers and securing medicines and supplies. Projects supporting Yemen’s health sector, the first line of defense against the pandemic, also build the capacity of Yemenis to provide medical care to their countrymen. SDRPY has made it possible for medical services to reach patients in need in remote areas, not just cities. Projects on islands and in rural and remote districts have facilitated access to medical treatment for all, including patients who have never even had access to such services before.

Anticipating the first registered case of COVID-19 in Yemen, SDRPY launched a prevention and sterilization campaign with the Yemeni Ministry of Health and the Cleaning Fund in Hadhramaut Governorate. This involved spraying and sterilizing public places, markets and residential areas, and in cities on the coast, beginning with Mukalla.

Medical projects in Socotra include the rehabilitation and equipment of the Maternity and Child Care Center, Nogid Health Center and Amadhen Health Center, and the design of the 9,000-square-meter Socotra Hospital with 95 beds. In Al-Mahra Governorate, the program has built and equipped a kidney dialysis center and established an ICU and operation building at Al-Ghaydah Central Hospital. SDRPY’s work in Aden includes equipping the dialysis center, providing a desalination plant and medical equipment at the Republican Hospital, rehabilitating Aden General Hospital and establishing the Cardiology Center. In Hajjah Governorate, the program has furnished and equipped the health center on Al-Fasht Island and provided a fully equipped ambulance in Hayran. Hadhramaut has received 5 modern ambulances, and in Marib Governorate, intensive care centers have been equipped by SDRPY and ambulances supplied to Kara General Hospital, 26th of September Hospital and Marib Authority Hospital.

In the temporary capital of Aden, accumulated waste had caused the spread of disease. SDRPY responded by intervening with machinery and equipment for waste removal via a plan devised with civil society and official municipal bodies. In the first month of the ‘Beautiful Aden’ campaign, now in the second phase of its 3-month duration, 222% of the total waste expected to be cleared during phase one was removed. The campaign served 120,155 direct and 341,744 indirect beneficiaries in the governorate and exceeded its established targets by removing 21,755 cubic meters of waste that had piled up in Aden’s streets and neighborhoods. The expected goal had been to remove 9,000 cubic meters.

SDRPY projects also contribute to reducing the risks associated with using unclean water and preventing certain diseases, including cholera. SDRPY continues to provide water tankers, dig wells and develop the water sector with a multitude of projects, thus confronting the threat of COVID-19 and other epidemics and disease.

Through its agriculture and fisheries projects, SDRPY has mitigated the impact of the current crisis on families and communities in Yemen by bolstering food production. The program has helped strengthen food security, build capacity and raise efficiency in local communities, making them more resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Crucially, SDRPY takes climate-based crises in Yemen into consideration as part of its crisis and emergency response plan. The program confronts these crises to facilitate development work, standing with Yemenis in the affected provinces who fall victim to climate-related hazards.
