Saudi Support Increases Aden Port Activity

Aden, YEMEN / 23 January 2020 – The port of Aden set an all-time record in 2019, witnessing the largest increase in the volume of offloaded cargo in its history. The Saudi cranes grant to the port contributed significantly to the higher volumes, both in relief aid and commercial imports.

Yemen Ports Authority Information Director Abdullah Al-Sharafi confirmed an increase of 14% in offloaded cargo over 2018 volumes, in addition to a 17% increase in the number of containers handled. Al-Sharafi said that the port had unloaded more than five million tons of cargo at its container terminal over the course of last year. Aden port also achieved an increase of 14% in dry cargo handling, registering 637,042.5 tons.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has provided the port with two cranes, each with a capacity of 60 tons, as part of the support extended to Yemen under the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY). This support includes ports in a number of different Yemeni governorates. Saudi Arabia has also provided one 60-ton-capacity crane each to Mocha and Mukalla ports, and one 30-ton crane each to Nishtun and Socotra ports.

The importance of Saudi support lies in its power to raise the capacity and efficiency of Yemeni ports in general, thus improving flows of humanitarian aid, medical materials and commercial shipments into the country.

The port of Aden resumed work in 2016 after a standstill of nearly 5 months. Located on the Gulf of Aden on the south coast of Yemen, it is one of the largest natural ports in the world. In 1950, Aden was the second busiest harbor in the world after New York in terms of the number of vessels entering the port.

Saudi Projects in Vital Sectors Advance Socotra Development

Socotra, YEMEN / 29 January 2020 – The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) is implementing a series of vital projects in the Yemeni archipelago of Socotra in a variety of sectors, including water, energy, health, transportation, education and fisheries. The program also helps the island’s residents during the cyclones and tropical storms that often strike Socotra and result in torrential rains and damaging floods. These projects meet the needs of the people of this Yemeni island, positively impact services in all sectors, and contribute to improved daily living standards and greater job opportunities through the work they make available.

Water

In light of the shortage of water to homes and public facilities and frequent water cuts in Socotra Governorate, SDRPY has worked on a number of water resource management projects in the province. These come in the form of monthly supplies of diesel to run water pumps; water network, dam, reservoir, and water tank and tower construction; well drilling; and water tanker supplies. They have helped address the need for safe drinking water, provided water for livestock and agricultural irrigation, and generally improved the lives of the people of the archipelago.

Electricity

SDRPY has established special energy resource management projects on Socotra, boosting the efficiency of the provincial electricity sector. The program has completed work on the 3.75 MW Hadibu Power Station, which which includes the main plant building as well as fuel tanks, and the program has also provided the plant with oil derivatives and backup generators to prevent power outages. SDRPY also has an integrated electric power station project in the Qulansiyah district, supplying buildings, tanks and generators.

Health

Through the program, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has supported Socotra Governorate’s health sector with specific projects, including improvement of the Maternity and Child Care Center, now equipped under the program with modern laboratory devices and intensive care equipment. The program has also furnished Socotra Hospital with beds, supplies and a fully equipped ambulance, and has connected the facility to the public electricity grid. SDRPY has worked to rehabilitate and restore Najd Health Center and Amdhen Health Center, endowing both with medical equipment.

Transportation

In view of the strategic location of Socotra Island, the transportation sector has received support from SDRPY in the form of development of its port, aimed at increasing capacity and efficiency. This assistance has been positively reflected in the volumes of medical materials, commercial cargo and humanitarian aid flowing through the port since the project was established.

Education

SDRPY has established four schools on Socotra: Serdahen School, Qulansiyah School, Moan ibn Jabal School in Qadhib and Ali Bin Abi Talib School in Demahd. The program has also supplied eight school buses and printed new textbooks for these centers of learning.

Fisheries

In support of sustainable food production, the program has implemented special projects in the fisheries sector to benefit fishermen affected by cyclones and tropical storms that have hit the province. Support includes the provision of 100 new fishing boats with modern outboard motors to replace those lost at sea or destroyed.

Emergency Response and Rescue

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has spared no effort in coming to the aid of Socotra, repeatedly responding to calls for help, keeping open main and subsidiary roads subject to collapse during the cyclones that hit the island throughout the year, and working alongside local authorities to ensure public safety. SDRPY facilitates the movement of people in Socotra during cyclones and storms, operating all necessary machinery and equipment and mobilizing program specialists. SDRPY played a major role during and after the tropical cyclones Pawan, Kiyar, Luban and Mekunu.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia / 6 February 2020 – The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) signed a joint agreement on Wednesday with Alwaleed Philanthropies to support capacity-building among the Yemeni people in various fields and implement development projects to improve living standards and the economy in Yemen.

The agreement represents an extension of the keenness of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to assist the Yemeni government, complement the Kingdom's pioneering role in development, support sustainable projects through cooperation with the Yemeni government, and activate the outcomes of the workshop organized by SDRPY and held last November in the presence of Yemeni Prime Minister Dr. Maeen Abdul Malik Saeed, with the participation of Yemeni ministerial officials, to address the needs of the Yemeni people.

At the signing, the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen was represented by Saudi Ambassador to Yemen and SDRPY Supervisor Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jabir, while Alwaleed Philanthropies was represented by the foundation’s secretary-general, HRH Princess Lamia bint Majid Al Saud.

Alwaleed Philanthropies Secretary-General Princess Lamia said that the projects discussed and agreed upon with the program were the most important of the foundation and indicated that the governorate of Aden would now be the staging ground for operations in other provinces.

For his part, SDRPY Supervisor Ambassador Al Jabir said in his speech during the signing that the program would work in conjunction with Alwaleed Philanthropies and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to help the brothers and sisters in Yemen by building their capacity in various fields. In addition, he said, it would devise and implement projects and programs contributing to social development, empowering women and youth, and building bridges between cultures.

Ambassador Al Jabir added that the projects to be implemented within the framework of the joint agreement would include building and restoration of several residential units, providing a decent life for those most in need of safe housing in Aden, where about 5,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries are expected.

Ambassador Al Jabir indicated that priority would be given to development projects preparing young men and women to enter the labor market and empowering women to achieve this through specialized development programs. It is expected that direct and indirect beneficiaries of such specialized programs will number about 6,000.

The joint agreement for coordination and cooperation aims to empower women and youth through several areas of concentration, most importantly: training and employment in the public and private sectors.

Through the joint agreement, 1,000 housing units will be built and restored for approximately 5,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries. The parties to the agreement will also train and build the capacity of 1,000 Yemenis, preparing them to be entrepreneurs and craftsmen and women as well as helping them find employment after training in cooperation with UN-Habitat and the Education for Employment (EFE) organization.

SDRPY is considered a pioneer in development work in the Republic of Yemen, as more than 100 development projects have been implemented since the program’s inception in the water, health, education, energy & electricity, transportation (airports, roads and ports), agriculture & fisheries, and housing & government buildings sectors.
Working for forty years on 6 continents in 189 countries, Alwaleed Philanthropies has been managed to implement more than 100 projects, benefiting more than 976 million people around the world.
