Joint Saudi-UNDP Technical Team Formed to Work in Yemen

Riyadh / 26 June 2020 - The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) has formed a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) following a meeting between SDRPY Supervisor Ambassador Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jaber and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Nahed Hussein on Wednesday.

Following a review of SDRPY’s development goals and a briefing on its future projects in the environmental sanitation, social protection, food security and health sectors, the parties agreed to establish a joint technical team and a plan to partner with the Yemeni government during the transition from the phase of humanitarian aid to development.

UNDP and SDRPY agreed to define development priorities with regard to Yemen’s current status, reviewed the efforts of international development bodies, and discussed measures taken to mitigate the economic, social and health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The parties also examined ways of working jointly to speed Yemen’s economic recovery in light of current challenges to development work.

The two parties stressed the importance of creating a transformation plan to work in partnership with the Yemeni government and shift from relief work to development carefully, as the COVID-19 pandemic had brought about social change necessitating strengthened technologies for performing development work.

Ambassador Al Jaber clarified SDRPY’s strategy in carrying out its development projects in cooperation with the Yemeni government, local authorities and civil society organizations in accordance with the needs of local communities. Al Jaber also explained that SDRPY intends to expand its forthcoming developmental projects by working with the Yemeni Ministry of Planning and Cooperation to build the capacities of the Yemeni government and local authorities in implementing development projects and restoring basic services that have a direct impact on daily lives.

Among the attendees were SDRPY development specialists Dr. Adil Al-Qusadi, Randah Al-Hothali, Dr. Hala Al Saleh and Faisal Sasa, along with development experts from the UNDP Isaac Diwan, Bassam Ramadan, and Maris Oliver.

SDRPY seeks to expand its development programs, create jobs and improve livelihoods to help overcome the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Yemen’s economy. SDRPY is currently doing this through projects in 7 vital sectors to improve Yemeni living standards, launching 175 projects in two years: 18 health, 45 educational, 30 water, 26 government entities, 23 transportation, 20 energy, and 13 agriculture and fisheries projects.

Yemen’s Hadhramaut Province a Beneficiary of Saudi
Health, Education, Energy and Water Sector Support

Hadhramaut, YEMEN / 2 July 2020 - The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) has coordinated closely with authorities in Yemen’s Hadhramaut Governorate to meet public service needs. SDRPY is supporting Hadhramaut through a series of development projects in the health, education, energy and water sectors, and is also carrying out environmental sanitation work. The projects follow field visits to the governorate by program specialists to carry out development needs assessments in consultation with local authorities.

“The program is improving the education sector with the construction of two new schools in Mukalla and Seiyun,” says SDRPY Hadhramaut Director Eng. Abdullah Basulaiman. “This is in on top of delivering 100 fishing boats with outboard motors to residents of the province.”

Recently, SDRPY laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 9-classroom school in Seiyun on 1,200 m2 of land. Equipped with 162 sets of desks and chairs, 3 administrative offices, a chemistry lab and a sports field, the project will extend learning opportunities to 330 male and female students.

To heighten public safety, SDRPY launched a campaign to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Hadhramaut in April in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health and Population and the Cleaning and Improvement Fund reaching over a million beneficiaries. Apart from supporting the provincial treatment center for coronavirus cases and raising public awareness, the project involved sterilization procedures using high-quality equipment to spray diluted chlorine in markets and gathering places. The campaign lasted 30 working days and spanned 12 districts, using 150 spray workers, 50 transportation vehicles and 50 spray pumps.

SDRPY has supported Hadhramaut’s health sector by upgrading health centers and easing access to emergency health services in rural areas. The program has supplied ambulances to five hospitals in Al-Hajr, Mukalla, Al-Abr, Thamud and Seiyun districts.

The program has provided 6 water trucks to Seiyun to meet public needs for clean water and delivered 30,000 tons of oil derivatives (13,000 tons of mazut and 17,000 tons of diesel) to Mukalla port to keep Hadhramaut’s power stations operational 24/7.

To serve safety at Seiyun Airport, SDRPY has supplied an ambulance equipped with all medical and ambulatory gear, isolated cabin for patient protection, air conditioning system and sphygmomanometer, oxygen cylinder, drainage suction device, portable artificial respirator, automatic exterior defibrillator, wheelchair, mobile bed and stretcher.

Saudi Oil Derivatives Grant to Yemen’s Al-Mahra Province Enters 3rd Year

Al-Mahra, Yemen / 6 July 2020 – The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) has delivered the latest installment of the 2018 Saudi oil derivatives grant, with 4,800 tons of diesel arriving at Nishtun port in Yemen’s Al-Mahra province on Sunday. The grant has helped boost electricity generation for Al-Mahra since the fourth quarter of 2018, with 4,800 tons per month in summer and 3,600 tons per month in winter, for a total of 50,400 tons annually.

These supplies have enabled 11 central power stations in Al-Mahra Governorate to function properly and constantly, ensuring electricity reaches 82 rural communities and powering 24 projects providing basic services such as water supply and distribution facilities, hospitals and health centers.

Al-Mahra Governor Mohammed Ali Yasser – who received the fuel vessel alongside SDRPY Al-Mahra Director Eng. Abdullah Basulaiman, Al-Mahra Oil Company Manager Muhsen Ali and others – affirmed the importance of the grant in helping hospitals and other essential service facilities to operate. He announced that SDRPY would soon launch projects to construct a 40-megawatt power station and a road through King Salman Medical and Educational City, to complement its support for services and development in the energy, education, health, water, agriculture, fisheries and transportation sectors.

The grant has made a significant impact on stabilizing electrical currents and improving access to water in all areas of Al-Mahra Governorate, as well as alleviating the financial burden on local authorities in purchasing diesel. Continuous power cuts were a fact of daily life for the people of the province prior to the grant, and work was only possible for a few hours a day for most. Electricity in Al-Mahra is now readily available for both longtime residents and the displaced.

“SDRPY’s efforts are living manifestations of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s seriousness in helping Yemen and building a better future for its citizens,” said Eng. Basulaiman. “We are working to provide all that the Yemeni citizen needs in Al-Mahra and across Yemen’s governorates,” he explained, adding that the grant was intended to ensure the “permanence of electricity services, stability of electrical currents, improvement of the economy and living standards, and increased job opportunities.”

SDRPY organizes distribution of the oil derivatives grant in Al-Mahra Governorate through a receipt and delivery committee, in cooperation with the Al-Mahra Oil Company, the General Electricity Corporation, government authorities and civic organizations.
