📌 If the patient has a central catheter, a set of cultures should be drawn from the catheter and a second set should simultaneously be drawn from a peripheral site. This specific technique allows for the calculation of "differential time to positivity"

📌 A positive DTP is defined as pathogen growth at least 2 hours earlier from the catheter culture vs the peripheral blood culture, and can help rule in or out central line-associated bloodstream infections

📌 For febrile ICU patients with pyuria and in whom urinary tract infection (UTI) is suspected, replace the urinary catheter and obtain urine cultures from the newly placed catheter

 📌 If the probability of bacterial infection is deemed low to intermediate in a critically ill patient with new fever and no clear focus of infection, it is  suggested to measure procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in addition to bedside clinical evaluation to obtain a baseline value to assist in the discontinuation of antimicrobial therapy.

 📌 Decisions on initiating, altering, or discontinuing antimicrobial therapy should not be made solely based on changes in PCT or CRP levels.
