Why do many think that Delena's first kiss was out of pity?

I have the opposite impression. I think it was at that moment when Damon was dying that Elena realized she was in love with him. The fact that she said in front of others that it was a goodbye kiss was more of her attempt to deceive herself and her feelings.

By the way, I'm not judging her at all. I mean this is a show about vampires who rip people's hearts out and everyone is cool with them, and it's like a crime to fall in love with your boyfriend's brother. Please spare me the false morality. Certainly, Elena and Damon are a much more beautiful and better couple than she and Stefan.
